SANTA ANA, CA.—The 24th Nike Extravaganza is yet again chock full of quality players and teams and right off the bat Oak Hill Academy demonstrated their prowess with a dismantling of Santa Margarita 94-67. Cole Anthony (Oak Hill Academy) was the headliner of the night, but it would be 6-foot-3 junior Cam Taylor (Oak Hill Academy) who would put on a show reminiscent of former Detroit Piston star Joe Dumars.
Cam Thomas (Oak Hill Academy)
2020, SG, 6-foot-3, 180 pounds
Joel’s Take: The best perimeter scorer at the NikeX would have to be Mr. Thomas. Long time scout and HOF writer Frank Burlison tabbed him the next Joe Dumars (Detroit Pistons). Google him and you’ll see his game.
Max Allen (Bishop Gorman)
2022, C, 6-foot-6, 225 pounds
Joel’s Take: Allen put on a display of footwork and fundamentals in the post that was reminiscent of Kevin Love (NBA/UCLA/Lake Oswego). His game is similar to Michigan State power forward Xavier Tillman. His soft hands, long arms, and savvy around the rim is special.
Ian Martinez (JSerra)
2020, SG, 6-foot-2, 170 pounds
Joel’s Take: This kid is a highlight reel ready to happen. His first two buckets in the game came with flair and spectacular bounce. His dunking exhibitions are a sight to see, but it’s the lift on his jump shot (when on balance) is special as well. He needs to improve his ball handling versus pressure, but the physical tools are evident.
Ziaire Williams (Sherman Oaks/Notre Dame)
2020, WF, 6-foot-8, 190 pounds
Joel’s Take: It took awhile for him and his teammates for that matter to get going as St. John Bosco roared out to a 22-point lead. However, his all-around skills took over in the 2nd half with a number of high-level finishes, deep jump shots off the dribble, and some nifty passing.
Johnny Juzang (Harvard-Westlake)
2020, SG, 6-foot-6, 195 pounds
Joel’s Take: Juzang is evolving into a good all-around player. He is known for his scoring outputs but his efficiency isn’t always there. However, lately his shot selection has been terrific as well as his passing, rebounding and leadership.
