Whether it be lateral quickness, raw speed, strength in the paint, or an insane vertical, being an explosive athlete is one of the best benefits a player can give his team. As a subsequent post to our previous Five Explosive Players post, here is a list of five more explosive layers from the 2019 Bishop McGuinness classic.
Zack Tretheway 2019 Deer Creek PG
Zack Tretheway was a pretty phenomenal shooter off-the-dribble at the Bishop McGuinness Classic. In the consolation game, he came out of the gate firing with his quick release and accuracy from deep. He plays under control, abstaining from chucking up unnecessary shots, but still hits some absurd long-balls. The precedent he set early in that game forces the Norman defense to respect his play.
Ben Smith 2019 Edmond Santa Fe W
Ben Smith was named an all-tournament selection for the Wolves in a spectacular showing for Santa Fe. Tasked with playing on some of the most talented opposing players, Smith was a lock-down defender who also dominated the scoring game. In the Championship game, Smith led the Wolves with 14 points in a low-scoring affair. He did so on one of the toughest, most disciplined defenses in the state in Edmond Memorial. His ability to blow by and stop on a dime for the shot is almost unfair with his height advantage.
Ben Emmert 2020 Norman W/F
Ben Emmert, a 6-foot-5 forward from Norman, has one of the best all-around games you will see from a guy his size. He has a stout frame, but is as fast and graceful as most guards. He plays great defense and rebounds well. He also has a great shot, gets open in the paint, slashes, and can finish high from mid-range, or beat defenders at the rim.
Shemar Smith 2019 Norman North F
Shemar Smith brings an unmatched level of tenacity and energy to the floor. He changes the game with his hustle, determination, and unforgiving style of play. The senior UCO commit stands at 6-foot-6 inches and uses every bit of it to get rebounds on both ends and keep opposing forwards at bay in the paint. He has the strength to impose his will as a rim protector and takes what he pleases from opposing shots.
Colby Onyekuru 2021 Edmond Santa Fe W
Colby Onyekuru has a pretty unique skill set that has yet to receive the attention it deserves. The 6-foot-4 sophomore forward helped his team to the championship game and earned all-tournament honors in the process. Onyekuru was one of the most versatile swingmen at the BMCHS Classic. He can knock down shots from deep but can also explode into the lane and get his. He has been a well-kept secret for the Wolves this year, but that should be changing pretty soon.
