Players who possess the athleticism, ball iQ, and leadership qualities to make a great floor general are not always easy to find, but you will notice their presence in the game when you see one. They are especially good at creating opportunities for others from the pass or even just leading vocally. There were plenty of touted floor generals at the 2019 Bishop McGuinness Classic; these were the ones we noticed the most.
Anthony Bowen 2021 Choctaw PG
Choctaw’s Anthony Bowen has a special talent as a floor general. The Yellow Jackets got hot at the open of the third quarter; oftentimes, the most crucial part of a tight game. There was no doubt that Bowen’s leadership in the rebounding game and as a facilitator was an impetus for the Yellow Jackets.
Damien Wrenn 2020 Bishop McGuinness PG
Damien Wrenn’s speed, defense, ball-handling, and passing made him one of the best all-around floor generals at the BMHSC. He is a quick, shifty guard with great hands and solid vision to find plays and make them. He also showed a really nice pull-up game, displaying a quick release and some bunnies to hit shots over defenders.
Miles Slater 2019 Deer Creek PG
Miles Slater of Deer Creek is one of the smoothest ball-handlers and passers in the Edmond area. He displayed his talents with a few head-turning drive and dish plays against Norman on Saturday afternoon. Slater, a 5-foot-10-inch point guard, compliments his weapons, i.e. his teammates, to their full potential, always looking for the next pass and catching defenders asleep.
Jaylon White 2021 Norman North PG
Jaylon White is one of those players that makes you really just enjoy watching high school hoops. White not only makes great passes to get looks for his teammates, but he also adds some flash to make you stand up out of your seat and say “wow.” He was pivotal for his team in the third-place game against Midwest City in getting opportunities on fast-breaks and off the dribble in sets.
Donovan Vickers 2020 Edmond Santa Fe PG
Donovan Vickers is a talented point guard who utilized some of the best team decision making at the BMCHS Classic. Typically a hot scorer, Vickers recognized early that he shot was not falling the way it usually would in the championship game. Rather than engage in a forceful style of play, Vickers kept cool, took shots he was confident in, and facilitated the ball to his teammates. He has developed into an important leader for this Santa Fe team.
