Though there are heavy favorites in a couple divisions (Bartlett, Memphis East in AAA and Wooddale, Raleigh-Egypt) second place is the current residence for some exceptionally capable challengers.
Second place teams might trail in the regular season standings, but historically both first and second place teams challenge for regional titles. State just might include a currently second place team, so this series of predictions features elite second place teams capable of making that glorious run(s).
Hancock County or Cosby
One of these teams will win 2A’s regular season, but the other will be equally tough for any Class A Region 1 team to bounce. Cosby will likely roll any District 1 team in the playoffs.
Eagleville
Eagleville could easily win the #1 seed. District 8A is not exceptionally challenging, but the Eagleville win over Columbia Academy speaks to the strength of the Eagles. To be fair to CA, Eagleville lost to them back on December 8th. Eagleville meets district leader Fayetteville a week from tonight.
Harriman, Oakdale, Oneida
Class A District 3 is still up for grabs with Oakdale, Harrima, Oneida, and even Wartburg within striking range. Oakdale advanced to Class A State last winter. Expect them to win the #1 seed, but Harriman already owns quality wins over North Greene, Oneida, Hampton, and Wartburg.
Monterey
While Clay County is the class of District 6A, the Monterey Wildcats have that intangible “know how to win” quality. Last year Monterey fell in the Class a semifinals to eventual champions Loretto.
McKenzie
Friday West Carroll hosts McKenzie’s Rebels. If WCHS wins, then they will likely walk away with the 11A District Title. Fear not McKenzie fans, Lucas King and the deep junior class are gifted enough to push you deep into the playoffs.
Summertown
Brady Brown and SHS are chasing Loretto.
Greenfield, Bradford
B.T. Washington
Manassas won 90.9% of their District 15A games and feel likely to capture the #1 seed. B.T Washington (8-1) is motoring aliong. Trashun Marion provides a threatening center piece at 6-foot-6, 245 pounds.
keep an eye fixated on MAHS, too.
