Now that the calendar has turned from 2018 to 2019 and teams have entered conference play, let’s take a look at who are the leading scorers in Colorado’s Class 5A and how they’re doing it.
1. Kenny Foster, 6-4, G, Smoky Hill, 2019, 28.4 ppg
Foster is Prep Hoops’ top-ranked senior in Colorado and the Wyoming-bound guard has been a known commodity for a long time. Scoring nearly 30 points per game through nine games, he has failed to reach 25 points just once this season and boasts a season high of 39 points against ThunderRidge on Dec. 12. Not only is Foster putting the ball in the basket at will, he is also averaging 10.1 rebounds, 5.0 assists, 1.6 steals and 1.7 blocks per game.
2. Chase Hettinger, 6-5, G/F, Castle View, 2019, 24.4 ppg
Another senior whose season high of 39 points against Thomas Jefferson fell just one short of the 40-point mark, the Sabercats wing is contributing just over 35 percent of his team’s points per game. With Hettinger shouldering the scoring load, and doing so efficiently by shooting 54 percent from the field, Castle View has won its last seven games and boasts a 9-2 record. That bodes well for a team that didn’t make it past the first round of last year’s state tournament.
3. Jack Fisher, 6-4, G, Poudre, 2019, 22.2 ppg
Scoring nearly eight points more per game than he did in 2017-18, Fisher is off to a flying start in his senior season with the Impalas. While the senior guard is having an all-around strong season, he has really been lighting it up from behind the 3-point arc. Through 10 games played, Fisher has made 31 of his 68 attempts from long range for an impressive 46 percent.
4. Julian Hammond III, 6-2, G, Cherry Creek, 2021, 21.4 ppg
Shooting 53 percent from the field, 36 percent from 3-point range and 83 percent at the free-throw line, Hammond III is scoring over 20 points per game and doing so incredibly efficiently. He is also the only sophomore among the top 33 scorers in Class 5A at the moment. Hammond III is also rounding out a solid stat line with 5.3 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.9 steals a night.
5. Josh Rogers, 6-2, G, Arvada West, 2019, 21.1 ppg
Rogers exploded for 35 points in just the Wildcats’ second game of the season and has since paced the offense for a squad that cracked the CHSAANow.com top 10 this week. Also averaging 5.9 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game, he is shooting 44 percent through nine games played.
