With home stretch of the season on the horizon, let’s take a look at the 6th- through 10th-leading steals men in Colorado’s Class 5A.
6. Grant Wilkinson, 6-2, G, Pine Creek, 2019, 3.1 spg
Wilkinson is most definitely on this list because he is one of the best defensive players in Colorado. But he does a lot more for his team than simply taking the basketball away from the other team over three times a game. He’s also averaging 15.5 points, 7.7 rebounds and 4.2 assists.
7. Malachi Owens, 5-10, G, Aurora Central, 2019, 3.0 spg
Owens has failed to score in double figures just once in 18 games this season, and is averaging 16.5 points per game. He’s also putting up 4.8 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 3.0 steals and 1.1 blocks per game.
8. Myron Hamilton, 5-10, FNE Warriors, 2019, 2.8 spg
Active and nosey, Hamilton does an excellent job of getting his hands on the ball when the opposing team doesn’t want him to. Against Denver South on Jan. 22, for example, the senior had eight steals that helped lead his team to a 77-59 victory.
9. Myles Purchase, 5-10, Cherry Creek, 2021, 2.8 spg
Just the second sophomore to crack the top 10, Purchase has been getting it done defensively for the Bruins. As he continues to come into his own as a scorer (12.0 ppg), he remains a consistent contributor in plenty of other ways.
10. Trevor Baskin, 6-6, F/G, Pomona, 2020, 2.7 spg
At 6-foot-6, Baskin makes excellent use of his length to get off a high arching 3-point shot and to score over defenders in the painted area. He also uses that length on defense, where he not only averages 2.7 steals but also blocks 4.5 shots a game. He’s averaging a double-double (15.7 points and 10.9 rebounds) on the season.
