Now that the calendar has turned from 2018 to 2019 and most teams have entered conference play, let’s take a look at the 21st- through 25th-the leading scorers in Colorado’s Class 4A and how they’re getting it done.
21. Ladarius Mays, 6-1, G/F, Coronado, 2020, 16.3 ppg
Mays shot just 26 percent from 3-point range last season and improving that number to 32 percent so far in 2018-19 has been a boon for the 6-foot-1 guard. He is also grabbing 4.0 rebounds per game.
22. Darius Hornbuckle, 6-2, G, Thomas Jefferson, 2020, 15.9 ppg
Hornbuckle has had a few off nights but even more big games this season. His best scoring out so far in 2018-19 came against one of the best defensive teams in 4A, a 27-point outburst against No. 2-ranked defending 4A state champion Longmont on Dec. 6.
23. Andrew Duquette, 6-0, PG, Silver Creek, 2020, 15.9 ppg
Duquette was off to great start in 2018-19 – averaging 25.9 points, 2.1 assists, 3.1 rebounds and 2.4 steals per game – before suffering a high ankle sprain against Centaurus on Jan. 8. The Raptors are hoping to get Duquette back in the lineup after one month.
24. Josiah Baptista, 6-1, G/F/C, Mountain View, 2019, 15.8 ppg
A fast and physical defensive back on the football field, Baptista brings that same athleticism and aggression to the basketball court. The Mountain Lions senior is averaging 15.8 points, 6.0 rebounds and 2.5 steals per game, though he has played in only six games this winter according to MaxPreps.com.
25. Daryn Whisman, 6-2, G, Discovery Canyon, 2020, 15.8 ppg
Whisman doesn’t take a ton of 3-point attempts and prefers to get his scoring done by attacking in the paint. He is shooting just 34 percent from the floor but his points per shot have increased over Discovery Canyon’s past four games.
