Now that the calendar has turned from 2018 to 2019 and teams have entered conference play, let’s take a look at the sixth- through 10th-leading scorers in Colorado’s Class 3A and how they’re doing it.
Bryson Becker, 6-7, W, Platte Valley, 2019, 21.3 ppg
This long and athletic wing is averaging a double-double with 21.3 points and 10.9 rebounds per game. His scoring has increased significantly from 16.1 points per game as a junior and Becker continues to use his length and timing effectively at the defensive end, blocking 2.2 shots a night.
Nathaniel Plaisted, 5-8, G, James Irwin, 2019, 21.1 ppg
What’ is perhaps even more impressive than a 5-foot-8 guard scoring over 20 points per game is one that averages five steals per game. Also putting up 6.1 rebounds and 3.0 assists a game, Plaisted is quick with the ball in his hands and has a knack for getting to the free-throw line, where he has taken 87 attempts including a 20-for-24 showing at the line in James Irwin’s season opener.
Teagan Whiteskunk, 6-0, G, Montezuma-Cortez, 2020, 20.4 ppg
Not only does he have an awesome name, Whiteskunk also has an impressive state line – 20.4 points, 4.9 assists, 5.5 rebounds and 3.8 steals per game. The junior can also claim a season-high 43 points against Ridgway on Dec. 8 and his 37-percent (21 for 57) shooting stroke from long range is a big reason why the Panthers are undefeated at 8-0.
Andray Thomas Jr., 6-1, G, DSST: Stapleton, 2019, 20.3 ppg
Thomas Jr. is among to most efficient scorers in 3A, shooting 54 percent from the field, though he doesn’t do much shooting from 3-point range. He also boxes out well at 6-foot-1 and is one of the most productive rebounders in the classification, bringing down an average of 12.4 boards a night.
Dominique Clifford, 6-4, G/F, The Vanguard School, 2020, 19.9 ppg
Averaging just a hair under 20 points a game, Clifford forms a formidable trio with teammates Seth Fuqua (24.3 ppg) and Joseph Padilla (13.6 ppg) in terms of scoring the basketball. He is also averaging, 10.9 rebounds, 4.0 assists, 2.9 steals and 1.1 blocks every time the Coursers take the court.
