A lot of change happens between 9th-11th grade with growth spurts, work ethic and all around development taking place. In the meantime, we have begun a list to recognize some of the top 2022’s in the state. This list will grow and be updated over the course of the next few years.
2022 Class Outlook:
The freshman class in Washington is solid overall. Many players are just beginning to write their story, so a true breakdown will have to wait a little while. This class does not have the size of the 2021 group, but again, they are a year younger and some players have a chance to really blossom into players down the road. The freshman class has a lot of smaller guards at this time, but there are some young players with high ceilings nonetheless.
Pair of Young Duos to Watch:
Seattle Prep High School: Tyler Mrus and Braeden Smith is possibly the best young 1-2 punch in the state. Tyler is a 6’6 wing/forward with versatility and length in a growing frame. He is one that college scouts will easily be able to spot out in the freshman class. Braeden Smith is very good right now. He is very quick and shifty in the open floor at about 5’8-5’9. He is a high IQ point guard that controls the tempo of the game at varsity level right now.
Mt. Si High School: Quin Patterson and Bennett O’Connor are two cornerstones of Mt. Si’s future. Quin is a near 6’6 freshman shooter with a size 16 shoe. His best basketball is years ahead of him, but he is already an impact player at Mt. Si coming off the bench right now. Bennett will be Mt. Si’s starting point guard for the next four years to come. He has range to the three-line and a scorer’s mentality, although he is learning to run a team with D1 upperclassmen on his wings. These two have a chance to make a serious impact in years to come with continued development.
Other Notes:
- Auburn High School has a plethora of freshman that have gotten major varsity minutes. If that group stays together and develops, they will be a force in a couple years.
- Freshman’s club teams have intentionally been left off at this time. A lot of changes take place by 15U, so we will update at an appropriate time.
- Work ethic and development was mentioned many times in this article for a reason. Being ranked high as a freshman does not guarantee anything by junior or senior year. College coaches want to see improvement year to year. Relying on size and/or athleticism alone only lasts so long. Keep working!
