Here are five such players from around the state who have become even bigger impact players as juniors in 2019. We’ll bring you five more names next week.
Jayce Catchings 6’3″ Wentzville LIberty – The talented wing had a solid sophomore season while playing in the shadow of All-State older brother Kale Catchings (now at Harvard). Jayce has enjoyed a big breakout season in leading the Eagles to a 12-3 record. He is currently averaging 27.6 points a game while shooting 49 percent from the field and 43 percent from 3-point range. He also averages six rebounds and three steals a game. He has added a very effective mid-range jumper to go along with his excellent 3-point range.
David Layton 5’9″ Oak Ridge – The young SEMO bucket getter has been putting up some eye-popping numbers throughout the season. He is currently averaging 35.6 points while shooting 53 percent from the field. He is also getting 9.8 rebounds and 5.8 assists a game, so he plays the all-around game. He has enjoyed nights of 52 points and 49 points during the season. He is small, but he knows how to get buckets in a variety of ways. He comes at you non-stop.
Daniel Abreu 6’5″ Willard -After leading his team to a district championship last season, the versatile combo forward has taken his offensive game to another level this season. Earlier this week, he scored a season-high 45 points in a Willard victory. He also took the Blue & Gold Tournament by storm during the holiday season when he broke the tournament scoring record by averaging more than 30 points a game. He has a nice touch around the basket as a post player, but he can also score off the dribble and his outside shot has improved as well.
Gary Clark 6’7″ Cardinal Ritter – One of the most improved players in the St. Louis area, Clark has become a force in the post for the Lions, who have emerged again as one of the top Class 3 teams in the state. He has grown several inches over the past two years and his game has grown with it. Clark is currently averaging 13.3 points and 11 rebounds a game while shooting 65 percent from the field. He had 22 points and 12 rebounds in a big road victory at CBC last week.
Arlo Stump 5’10” Golden City: This youngster has been putting up buckets since his freshman year as one of the top offensive performers in the Class 1 ranks. He had already reached the 1,000 point mark in his career during his sophomore season and has already passed the 1,500-point mark this season while tracking towards 2,000 points with still his senior year left to play. Last week, he dropped 47 points in a victory over Dadeville in his team’s own tournament. Stump is currently averaging 28.4 points, six rebounds and four steals a game.
