The little mountain town outside of Christiansburg, VA is one of my favorite communities that I have gotten to know over the past five years that I’ve done this. After his son Chance passed away on July 6, 2007 at the age of four from a rare form of brain cancer (Atypical Teratoid Rhabdoid Tumor), Floyd County head coach Brian Harman and some of his staff and friends started the Chance Harman Memorial Fund, and held the first Chance Harman Classic later that year. The event has grown into one of the top events in the area, bringing together top teams from across VA, NC, WV, TN and others, and has raised more than $300,000 for cancer research in the form of ticket sales, sponsorships, raffles, silent auctions and much more. It is a wonderful cause held by wonderful people who take great care of me and anyone else who comes to support, and I would highly recommend supporting them in some way shape or form. Here’s the website for more information if you’d be interested.

While I’m happy I get to support the cause (I bought a raffle ticket), I’m also there to cover great basketball both locally in SWVA and throughout the area. There were 12 games throughout Friday and Saturday, and unfortunately I was only able to watch 9 of them, but I decided to put together a First Team, Second Team and a few Honorable Mention Teams from the 9 games that I saw. The First Team will be the top performers from the winning teams, the Second Team will be the top performers from the losing team with the Honorable Mention teams being the other standouts on the teams. With no further ado, here’s a look at the honorees of the Prep Hoops VA 2019 Chance Harman Underclassmen Honorable Mention Team.
Dean Reiber | 6’9” PF | NW Guilford (NC) 2020
Reiber was a breakout guy last season at the 2018 Chance Harman Classic, and this year he came back and showed it wasn’t a fluke at all. In their win over North Cross, Reiber was a presence inside and showed that he’s a solid mid major big man that teams should start recruiting now. He finished with a solid double-double of 12 points and 12 rebounds.
Bradley Dean | 6’3” WG | Gate City 2020
Dean is really starting to come into his own as the secondary scorer behind Zac Ervin, and he showed that when Ervin got off to a slow start against Floyd. Dean scored 7 points in the first quarter, and finished the game with 17, and was slowed since GC made such a concerted effort to get the top scorer in the state going after just 8 points from Ervin in the first half. He was also one of the main ballhanlders and only turned it over one time all game.
Henry Coleman | 6’8” F | Trinity Episcopal 2020
Coleman didn’t start because he was late for the bus, but he came off the bench and did what he always did, muscling smaller guys and using his athleticism and strength to put up big numbers on the offensive end. He didn’t shoot the ball particularly well, but he finished with 21 points and 7 rebounds and had some impressive finishes above the rim.
BJ Marable | 6’6” F | Grace Christian (TN) 2020
A long and lanky hybrid forward, Marable seemed like a guy who is on the verge of breaking out and has a very high ceiling moving forward. Against a sound Blue Ridge team he took the opportunities that were presented to him without forcing much. He’s a two way impact guy with some versatility on both ends. He finished with 12 points and 6 rebounds in their win.
Tee Bryan | 6’5” F | Patrick Henry 2020
Bryan showed flashes of what makes him special, and with his body as it is already he’s going to have colleges want him. The problem is that without a true point guard, Bryan gets thrust into playmaking roles and it just isn’t him. He shot the ball fairly well, attacked the rim hard and made shots in the paint. He finished with 9 points on just 5 shots from the field in their loss to Radford.
Mike Gray | 6’2” G | Blue Ridge 2021
Gray has been one of the Baron’s top scorers throughout the season, and despite dropping a goose egg against Grace Christian he did have an outing against Huntington Prep on Friday that made you think he could be a high major guy. He made some really tough shots off the bounce, contested and from behind the arc, finishing with 19 points, scoring 13 of them in the second half.
Crishawn Christmas | 6’4” G | Teays Valley (WV) 2021
A sophomore with a DePaul offer, Christmas has a high ceiling as a do-it-all guard if he can continue to develop. He’s a downhill guard who can get to the rim at will and finishes well with both hands. He rebounds on both ends of the floor and can guard multiple positions, and if he continues to work on his jump shot and playmaking ability he’ll be a high level guard moving forward.
Tanyan Sutphin | 5’10” G | Floyd County 2021
Suthpin’s older brother Cayden got the not for the second team, but younger brother Tanyan showed a good skill set as well and had an impressive outing against Gate City as well. He tied for the time high in points with his brother Cayden at 16, and he showed grit and toughness sticking his nose in with bigger guys defensively. He made plays for others as well with five assists, but you could see his age as he was 1-for-7 from the line. He has a chance to be good moving forward though.
Erik Prosise | 6’0 G | Trinity Episcopal 2021
Prosise started the season in the starting lineup for TES, but an injury held him out a couple of weeks. After a few games off the bench he’s back in the starting lineup and he’s starting to find his groove and get it going. He made some tough shots and stepped up big time in the second half for them, finishing with 14 points going 4-for-5 from the field and 3-for-4 from deep.
