There are several teams in Alabama that have a 1-2 punch at the high school level. This is really important because having a pair of great players provides teams with better play on the court and locker room leadership. This article will look at 5 dynamic duos.
Giancarlo Valdez and Noah Boler (Decatur Heritage)
These two are a great pair. Gian is a perimeter player and Noah controls the paint. Both of these guys have taken on the team’s identity, which is being tough to play against no matter the level. When these two are playing at their best, DHA, is a team no one wants to face. Valdez and Boler are two of the best players in 1A-3A.
BJ Comer and Cooper Meadows (PCA)
Prattville Christian is lucky to have 2 of the best seniors in the state. These two guys play extremely well together. Comer is a scoring point guard, and Meadows is a small forward who can do it all. BJ is averaging 18-4-5, and Cooper is averaging 20-9-2. Both shoot above 38% from three as well. This pair brings more than just an offensive punch to the table. PCA’s defense starts and ends with Comer and Meadows as well.
Nathan Moore and JC Norris (Huntsville)
What these two have done for Huntsville will be felt more once they graduate. These seniors have completely bought into first year Huntsville head coach, Christian Schweers, and his plans for the program. They have shown leadership off the court, and lead their team on it. Everything Huntsville does starts and ends with Moore and Norris. Moore is averaging 15 points, 10 rebounds, and 3 blocks per game. Norris is also averaging 15 points per game, while shooting 40% from 3.
Kam Woods and GaQuincy McKinstry (Pinson Valley)
Kam and Kool-Aid might be the most electrifying duo in the state. These two perimeter players will also get the opportunity to play together for one more season (Junior and Sophomore). This pair plays with a great confidence. Woods is a wizard with ball, and Kool-Aid is one of the best athletes in the state. Both players can shoot the ball at a high clip (42% and 35%), and they are both active defenders. Kam is averaging 26-5-3, and McKinstry is averaging 16-3-3.
Justin Minter and Cameron Tucker (Wenonah)
Wenonah is lead by their senior backcourt. When Justin and Cam are playing at a high level, Wenonah is one of the best teams in the state. Both these guys do it all for the Dragons. Justin and Cam aren’t overly flashy. They are just dogs. Tough competitors. Minter is averaging 15-6-6, and Tucker is averaging 17-4-5. With their senior season coming to a close, the only thing that will satisfy this backcourt is an area championship and a state championship.
Honorable Mention
Trendon Watford and Colby Jones/Paul Stramaglia are quite the trio for Mountain Brook. Watford is the state’s best overall player and averages over 20 and 10 a game. Jones and Stramaglia are a great backcourt and do different things for the Spartans. Watford plays so well with his backcourt.
Barry Dunning, Cole LaRue, and Matthew McNeece might be the best front court trio in the state. Dunning is an electric freshman wing. LaRue is a skilled junior big, and McNeece is a tough do it all senior forward. Putting one above the other is too hard when all three play well together.
