We like to mix it up as much as possible with these lists, so seldom will we use a team more than once, but what Waukee has been doing warrants a second mention. They have now started the season 13-0, and have done so while playing in the ultra-tough CIML, and while playing its last couple games without injured star point guard Noah Hart (who was having an amazing senior season). They won those two games over formidable opponents Mason City and Ankeny Centennial by an average of 27 points. The Warriors are currently No. 2 in the state and despite being without Hart for the remainder of the season, figure to be among the favorites to bring home a Class 4A state title.
Sergeant Bluff-Luton
Not only have the Warriors run off six straight wins, but four of those six have come against 4A teams, and last week they beat previously unbeaten Sioux City East. Conner Groves is proving why he’s one of the state’s best guards, he’s averaging 15.2 points per game this season, and scored 29 in the big win against the Black Raiders. SB-L is on a mission to win a 3A title, and being that it’s the No. 1-ranked team in 3A right now; we wouldn’t bet against it.
South Central Calhoun
After losing to South Hamilton the second game of the season, South Central Calhoun has run off 14 straight wins, and emerged as one of 2A’s top teams. The Titans from Lake City, Iowa have one of the state’s breakout junior guards with Zane Neubaum, and have been winning while playing a formidable schedule. According to Bcmoorerankings.com, the Titans have played the 23rd toughest schedule in a 96-team Class 2A field. They’re currently ranked 10th in PHIA’s 2A rankings.
Prince of Peace
The Clinton, Iowa-based Irish are red-hot, winners of 12 straight after a 2-1 start to the season. The Class 1A team got a huge win over 4A squad Davenport North on Jan. 15th and have emerged as a serious threat to not only make it to Wells Fargo Arena come March, but to make some noise once they get there. It’s a senior-laden squad led by Kaidion Larson, a 6-foot point guard averaging 21.4 points, 3.2 assists and 2.6 steals per game. Larson and Co. will look to make it 13 in a row next Monday against Easton Valley (14-3).
Westside, Ar-We-Va
Keegan Simons, Drew Schurke and Co. are no strangers to winning in bunches. Last season the Rockets won 17 games, two seasons ago they won 24 times. So, it’s really no surprise that the experienced group is currently 17-0. One of just 12 undefeated teams remaining, Ar-We-Va is not narrowly getting by opponents, either. The Rockets have won those 17 games by an average of 22 points. Simons is averaging 18.8 points and 13.2 rebounds per game. Schurke is going for 17.2 points and 4.6 assists this season.
