There are plenty of good teams that are playing tough nosed basketball.
Here is a look at five underrated squads that are making some noise right now.
Palmetto
The Panthers have been flourishing in Class 9A-District 16 with a 13-3 overall record and a 9-0 record in district play. Palmetto’s three losses have come by six points and just one of them was to a Florida team, Westminster, 65-64 at the HoopHall on Nov. 28. 2019 forwards Josmel Martinez and Alex Rodriguez and 2020 guards Kentron Poitier and Martin Mercedes are always reliable. Killian represents the biggest challenge in district play at 13-4, 4-2.
Windermere
The second-year Wolverines are off to a hot start with a 13-2 record and a 4-0 showing in Class 8A-District 5. The biggest test comes against mainstay Edgewater on the road on Jan. 30. Windermere has 2019 FGCU commit Dakota Rivers down low along with 2019 guards Joshua Colon and Dante Love and 2021 guard Trey Moss. The Wolverines play fast and always push the ball in transition.
Mainland
Up in Daytona, the Buccaneers are 18-1 and 5-0 in Class 7A-District 5. Winners of 17 straight, Mainland’s lone loss came in the second game of the season in overtime to Edgewater, 57-49. 2020 guard Jordan Sears has been superb for this athletic group since arriving from Atlantic this off-season. 2019 forwards Johnny Brown and RJ Rhoden (Long Beach State commit) are reliable scorers all over the court. 2020 guard Taron Keith is a pure speedster for Mainland as well.
Doral
At 16-0, the Firebirds are tearing it up as the defending Class 7A state champions. Doral is 7-0 in Class 7A-District play with Miami Springs and Belen Jesuit right there behind. 2020 guard Devin Carter has been nearly unstoppable this season as a transfer from Colorado as he’s averaged 27.8 PPG. 2019 guard Jonathan Nunez continues his strong play from a year ago while fellow senior guard Anthony Pellerano has been just as solid. The Firebirds are in for the long haul again this season.
Norland
Always a force in Class 7A, the Vikings have been impressive this season with a 12-2 and 3-0 showing in Class 7A-District 15. The lone loss to a Florida team came back on Nov. 29 against Coral Gables, 48-40. 2019 Louisiana Lafayette commit Chris Spenkuch has been at the forefront of the team’s success with constant games in double digits. 2020 forward Kendrick Wilson and 2019 guards Travis Baker and Brandon Spaulding have been really sound. Also, 2020 guard Jahvon Smith has been a difference maker throughout the season. Norland is built for a run.
