The Class 8A Bulldogs handled business over a young Windermere Prep squad 64-44.
Here is a look at the five takeaways from the game.
Max Fiedler dominates in the first half
Finishing with a game-high 26 points, 6’10” Melbourne forward Max Fiedler did his work inside on the boards and as an attacker. The 2019 Rice commit was routinely at the free throw line in the first half where he scored 19 of his team’s 31 points. The offense runs through Fiedler. The big man isn’t overly quick, but his footwork is reliable and his effort level is always there. He plays through misses and doesn’t get rattled much.
Chris Roth is underrated
Playing a bad ankle, I came away highly impressed by 6’3″ Melbourne guard Chris Roth. The 2019 combo guard chipped in with 14 points on the day which included 12 points in the third quarter alone. He hit a 3-pointer and then moments later blocked a shot and wound up creating an open look for himself in the corner for a second straight 3-ball. Roth is an underrated talent who certainly warrants some college looks.
Fanbo Zeng has massive upside
At 6’9″, 2022 forward Fanbo Zeng is long and skinny. Still a raw talent, the Windermere Prep freshman has a ton of upside with his defensive prowess as a shot blocker and his smart passing. Zeng’s jump shot is coming along and he isn’t afraid to take chances from outside. He scored only two points in this game but contributed on both ends in various ways. He has to gain muscle to slow down the bigger defenders and he will only get better from here.
Melbourne’s guard play is too much
The trio of guards for Melbourne all dug in deep for the Bulldogs in this one. Roth alongside 2020 guards Cameron Wickline and Travis Maddox were driving, hitting floaters and making things happen all over the floor. Wickline added ( points) while Maddox had ( points). Roth is the shooter who sets up the whole offense, while Wickline and Maddox are able to take pressure off of everyone and move the ball around with purpose.
Windermere Prep has a lot of speed
Between 2021 guard Zavien Williams (a team-high 13 points), 2021 guard Eathen Williams and 2022 guard Jayden Williams, the Lakers have quick twitch players who get up and down the court fast. Zavien Williams is the leader of this offense and is able to finish strong near the rim. Eathen Williams (five points) and Jayden Williams (six points) are developing and both showed flashes and gifted outside shooters.
2019 Melbourne forward Max Fiedler (Rice commit) had a dominant first half against Windermere Prep with 19 points. The fundamental big man never gives up on plays. @maxfiedler123 @teammoam pic.twitter.com/pap24xwIXO
