Leading 52-49 early in the fourth quarter, the Terrapins (11-2) outscored the Warriors 17-7 the rest of the way.
Calvary Christian falls to 9-5 in Class 4A-District 4.
Here are five takeaways from the evening.
Jaden Gray is maturing
It is quite clear that 2020 Tampa Prep guard Jaden Gray takes basketball seriously. Adding some muscle this off-season and working on his all-around game, the junior really paced the floor well as a rebounder, attacker and speedster on the break. Gray finished with 16 points on the night which included 10 points in the second half push.
Dean Bakkalapolu can flat out shoot
There wasn’t a better pure shooter on the floor in this game than 2021 Calvary Christian guard Dean Bakkalapolu. The sophomore led all scorers with 20 points which included five 3’s and a trip to the free throw line where he knocked down three shots. He knocked three 3’s from the end of the first quarter and the start of the second quarter. Bakkalapolu is someone to keep a close eye on.
Owen Carlson is a reliable weapon
2019 guard Owen Carlson can create on his own and make shots often. The Tampa Prep senior added 13 points in this game which included three triples. He’s at his best when fed the ball on the break and he can set his feet from outside. Carlson is good alongside Gray and senior guard/forward Jaren Phillips.
Josh Berenbaum had a steady showing
2020 Calvary Christian guard/forward Josh Berenbaum had nine points in the first quarter including a three-point play on the first possession of the game. He finished with 18 points being slowed down in the second half with 2019 Tampa Prep forward Jola Bankole doing a fine job against him. Berenbaum is a really sound shooter and a guy who scraps on the boards.
Jaren Phillips showed toughness
On a night where Phillips was one of three players who scored nine points (2020 guards Isaac Ward and Gabriel Sharp did as well), it was Phillips who impressed with his passing and willingness to rebound. The 2019 guard/forward was unselfish, smart and gritty at times. He got into foul trouble early in the third quarter, but he is expanding his efforts and game.
