Pulling away in the second quarter behind a good shooting performance, Santa Fe Catholic made things happen and never looked back.
Here is a look at five takeaways from the evening.
Javon Bell was hitting on all cylinders
Hitting back to back 3’s right in front of the Cambridge Christian bench in the second quarter, it seemed as if 2020 guard Javon Bell found his jumper again. It was the smartest and most complete game the Santa Fe Catholic junior had this season. Bell led all scorers with 26 points and only took one bad shot all night. His shooting ability and energy in transition was on full display.
Michael Watkins showed persistence
With only four points at halftime, 2019 Cambridge Christian guard Michael Watkins continued to fight despite some bad breaks. The senior finished with 22 points, tacking on 18 points in the second half as he tried to singlehandedly keep his team in the game. Watkins is a good attacker and a guy who is consistent.
Ray Davis and Matt Massarella paced the floor well
The production Santa Fe Catholic got out of their point guard duo Ray Davis and Matt Massarella was very solid. Davis, a 2020 guard had 14 points which included a quick start in the first quarter with six points. Massarella came on late in the game to finish with 11 points with seven points in the fourth quarter. Massarella fought for a rebound on a late possession and put it back in for two.
Zavion Campbell’s toughness
A lengthy and strong guard/forward, Zavion Campbell was often at the free throw line. Although the 2019 Cambridge Christian athlete didn’t shoot a high percentage, he flashed his toughness and it was a pleasure to watch. Campbell ended the night with eight points. 2022 guard Mac Creek contributed nine points (all 3’s) while 2019 guard Jayden Martin had six points (both 3’s).
Santa Fe Catholic’s energy
By far the most complete performance of the season for Santa Fe Catholic. Bell was steady in every quarter, Davis was distributing (11 assists), 2020 guard Joe Stubbs was bringing his usual intensity (14 points) while 2019 forward Jaylon Smith (10 rebounds). Massarella was focused in this game while 2019 guards Miles Thompson and Alex Shoman each added six points.
