Wharton handled business with a 79-32 victory.
Here is a look at the five takeaways from the outing.
Darin Green is better each game
2019 UCF commit Darin Green Jr. is a different player than last year. The 6’5″ has always been a lethal deep range shooter and mid-range threat, but on Thursday, he showed off his strength as a ballhandler and attacker and his all-around passing ability. Green Jr. is one of the hardest workers in the Tampa Bay area and the entire state. Coaches, fans and other players were talking about how Green Jr. could arguably play in anywhere in Division I. That is quite telling.
Jasper Floyd is reliable
All year long, we’ve seen Jasper Floyd play steady next to Green Jr. It has been huge for this offense that he’s able to take pressure off everyone with his ballhandling skills and outside touch. Floyd recorded 14 points in the win and at times was nearly as good as Green Jr. with his high IQ passing.
Evan Kinsey and Carr Thiam can play
A pair of upperclassmen, 2019 forward Evan Kinsey and 2020 guard Carr Thiam were very solid in their own ways in this game. Kinsey totaled 11 points and was able to get things done near the cup with his 6’5″ frame. As for Thiam, he totaled eight points and was handling the ball alongside Floyd and Green Jr. at times.
Dexter Caldwell stands out
2020 guard Dexter Caldwell was certainly the best thing on the floor for Robinson in this one. With eight points, Caldwell didn’t do much early on with his team struggling but as the game picked up, he was able to win one on one battles and his energy was nice to see. The junior has a chance to be a true threat if he can gain muscle and keep up his aggressiveness.
Wharton’s team play is impressive
From the start of the game, Wharton was pushing the ball up the floor, making crisp passes and quite frankly making it look easy and fun to play the game of basketball. The Wildcats improved to 17-4 with the win and as the district tournament nears, there is a large chance that this squad can pull away in Class 8A-District 8.
