Here are 5 Takeaways from Lauderdale Lakes:
Dillard earns No. 1 seed
Dillard (13-4, 4-0) completed a sweep of Boyd Anderson, 51-47, to finish the regular-season district race unbeaten and earn the No. 1 seed in the upcoming district tournament. The Panthers also defeated Boyd Anderson, 59-44, at home Dec. 14. Dillard went 2-0 vs. Northeast, winning 61-32 and 65-58.
“We locked up the No. 1 seed in the district, which is good for us,” Dillard coach Darryl Burrows said. The victory gives Dillard a pass into the 7A regionals. The Panthers have locked up a berth in the district tournament championship game.
Didn’t get a shot off
Down 3 with 6.2 seconds left, Boyd Anderson had possession to try and diagram a 3-pointer to tie things up. But the Cobras threw the ball away without getting off a shot. 2021 Thaddeus Squire‘s pass to Floyd Rideau was tipped by Christopher Mattair and intercepted by Makerere Williams. Williams then made one free throw to put Dillard up four before intentionally missing the second free throw. Boyd Anderson fell to 13-9 overall and 2-2 in the district.
Dillard one in-state loss
Dillard is a winner of its last four games. Three of the Panthers’ four losses have come against out-of-state programs. Class 8A Blanche Ely is Dillard’s only in-state defeat.
Bartley impresses
Dillard Deshawn Bartley continued his strong play at point guard. The senior used his driving ability to get to the line often. Eight of his team-high 13 points came at the free-throw line. Bartley runs the show for coach Burrows and plays very good defense. 2020 Darryl Burrows connected on three big 3-pointers on the way to 11 points and the combination of Williams (2019) and 2020 Jalen Haynes added 19.
“Late we came in and hit three 3s right in a row,” Burrows said. “That kind of opened it up a little bit.”
Duhart strong game
Boyd Anderson senior forward R.J. Duhart had a strong game, hitting six field goals and finishing with 14 points. Duhart was money on jumpers from the elbow and is an excellent passer. Duhart, who transferred to BA from Atlantic, is getting recruited by FGCU, Canisius and FAU among others. Squire led the Cobras with 15 points, including three first-half 3-pointers. Part of Boyd Anderson’s downfall: Rideau, Todd Johnson and Kenny Anderson were held to a combined 11 points.
