It was a match-up of the past two Class 5A state champions. Cilk McSweeney and Calvary won it all in Lakeland in 2017, while the Sharks are the defending 5A champs.
This one would be all University School. The Sharks jumped out to an 8-0 lead and never looked back en route to a 78-43 victory. Here are 5 Takeaways from Tuesday:
Rare start for Beaubrun
Jalil Beaubrun, a 6-foot-8 senior, earned a rare start with Jace Howard injured and cashed in early.
Beaubrun nailed two 3-pointers in that early 8-0 start for the Sharks. Unfortunately, he picked up two fouls in the first 3 1/2 minutes of the game and was not a factor the rest of the way.
The 6-6 Howard, a junior, suffered a hairline fracture during University School’s trip out to Portland, Ore. He is expected to be able to get back to basketball activities in two weeks.
Freshman Jett Howard scored 5 points for U-School. The Howard boys are sons of Miami Heat assistant Juwan Howard.
Duke recruit Carey leads way
Duke 2019 recruit Vernon Carey Jr. led University School with 24 points.
The 6-10 center did his damage before calling it a night with 1:17 left in the third quarter. Carey made nine field goals, including one 3-pointer, and five free throws.
2020 star Scottie Barnes added 14 points, including two 3-pointers.
Variance debuts
L.D. Variance, a transfer from Atlantic High, played in his first game for Calvary Christian on Tuesday.
The junior, wearing No. 13, came off the bench and scored 7 points.
Tough going for CCA
It was a tough night all around for Calvary.
The Eagles didn’t score their first field goal of the game until freshman Gregg Glenn III’s putback made it 19-5 with 1:14 left in the first quarter.
Calvary’s second field goal — also from the ninth-grader Glenn — would not come until there was just 1:58 left in the half. By halftime, University School led, 38-17.
The game was played with a running clock in the fourth quarter after U-School went up 70-35 on a Jeremy Posner 3-pointer.
Senior Tim Dalger led Calvary with 10 points.
No losses to FHSAA programs
Jim Carr and University School ran their record to 13-3 overall and 3-0 in the district.
The Sharks’ three losses are all to non-FHSAA schools: Philly Imhotep and IMG Academy at the City of Palms Classic in Fort Myers and to Sierra Canyon, of California, in the Les Schwab Invite in Oregon.
Calvary is 9-7 overall and 2-1 in the district.
