Sophomores Scotty Draud and Dashawn Jackson both played well but it was Beechwood’s role players who made all the winning plays late. Here’s what I took away from the game:
- Beechwood did not deserve to win that game. But they won anyway. And that says a lot about the mental makeup of that team. Down 8 with 35 seconds left, CJ Brannen, Aidan Beiger and Zach Deathrage made plays to win the game for the Tigers in a furious comeback. Even after the game was tied, Mitchell Schilling made a terrible foul away from the ball to put Dashawn Jackson on the line for the 1 and the bonus. After playing poorly for 31 minutes, the Tigers made the late push to win the game.
- Douglass badly needs a floor general. The young Broncos are devoid of leadership on the court. No one huddled the team to settle them down late. No one stepped up to stop the ball when Deathrage was going for the game winning bucket. Douglass has 12 losses on the year and 5 are by single digits, including the last 3. If someone will step up and be a leader for the team, they are capable of making the regional tournament. If not, their season will be over a month from now.
- Scotty Draud showed all aspects of his game. The 6’5 Sophomore is already drawing attention from high major schools and he scored the ball in the post, midrange and behind the three point line in addition to a nice sequence where he set his man up for a right to left crossover and scored with his left off the bounce. Draud led all scorers with 25 points (he averages 23 per game) and left 4 points at the free throw line. Scotty has great positional size and should end up comfortably as a mid major or better D1 player in two years.
- Dashawn Jackson needed more touches late. The Sophomore is highly ranked in our 2021 rankings for a reason. The 6’2 guard ended with 18 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals but late in the game the Beechwood defense was fully deny on Dashawn and he didn’t work super hard to get open. There was a sequence where he made a beautiful behind the back pass for a layup but I’d like to see him work harder to get open as he keeps developing.
- Points off Turnovers made the difference. Beechwood got 27 points off turnovers for the game, including 8 late ones to get the game tied with 9.4 seconds left. Douglass only had 9 points off turnovers. Douglass had 18 turnovers to 16 assists while Beechwood had 9 turnovers to 11 assists. And so many of the Bronco turnovers were live ball turnovers that led to points for the Tigers. Looking at the stats, Douglass shot a much better percentage, out-rebounded Beechwood and did everything to pull the upset. But still lost. And that’s the difference between a veteran team like Beechwood and a young group like Douglass.
