In the off season, Houston picked up sophomores T.J. Madlock and Mason Miller to go with guards Nick Tarrance, Alex Marsh, and Ethan Roberts and forwards Faizon Fields and Zander Yates.
Madlock is son of Memphis assistant coach Tony Madlock and Miller is the son of Tigers assistant coach and former NBA player Mike Miller.
T.J. Madlock is a 6-foot point guard who’s a very smart basketball player. He plays hard on both ends of the floor. His weakness right now is his outside shooting. Madlock has been up and down this season from the perimeter, but he doesn’t continue to settle for the jump shot. He attacks the rim, so he can get to the free throw line.
Madlock has a chance of being a special point guard in the 2021 class. In his team’s double-overtime win over Southwind Tuesday night, Madlock finished with 14 points and played a big part in the Mustangs’ comeback from being down 16 points in the first quarter.
Mason Miller has the potential to be a solid wing. At 6-7, he can space the floor, which will give his teammates, especially Madlock, Marsh, and Tarrance, nice looks at the basket. Miller can also knock down the long ball. In his first game with Houston back on Jan. 8 against Ridgeway, he scored nine points and made some nice passes to his teammates slashing to the basket.
Yates, who’s also 6-7 sophomore, was one of the guys Miller found in the 65-50 win over the Roadrunners. Yates can space the floor as well. His ability to make plays that always doesn’t involve scoring makes him a viable piece to the Mustangs’ success. Yates can shoot from long range and is very patient when Houston is running offensive sets. Yates had 13 points against the Jaguars.
Once the 2020-21 season gets here, many people will be talking about Yates, Miller, and Madlock. This trio is part of the reason why the Mustangs are currently 17-7 on the season.
