There is likely to be some separation over the next couple of years but right now the top 5-6 point guards in the class don’t have much room between them as prospects.
- Turner Buttry, Bowling Green – Buttry is a high IQ point who is the son of a coach and you can tell by how he plays that he has been in a gym most of his life. Not blessed with great size or athleticism, Turner uses his smarts to find open space and make the right pass. His ceiling as a college prospect is going to be limited to how much he grows but he is going to be a very good high school player.
- Aden Slone, Danville – Slone is a little flashier than Buttry but also plays a little more loose than his peer. That’s not a bad thing. Aden thrives in an up and down system where he can have the ball in his hands and be pushing the pace. His older brother was a 1,000 point scorer at Boyle and Slone was starting for the Rebels as a freshman but made the decision to transfer over the Christmas break and is hoping to play for Danville this season.
- Jordan Akal, Harlan – Likely the best pure scorer in the entire class, Akal has been a known commodity in the mountains for a couple of years now. Jordan is a volume scorer who takes a lot of shots but he has to for his team to compete. I was told recently that Jordan has grown a couple of inches. If true, he could be set up for a huge AAU season. Look for Akal to end up a 2,000+ point scorer or even 3,000 career points before graduation.
- Tre Irvin, Trinity – Irvin is a kid who would start at 90% of Kentucky’s high schools right now but because he’s at Trinity he’s playing freshman and JV. Irvin is a very flashy point guard with a tight handle. He’s an excellent passer and is dynamic in the open floor. It’s a safe bet that Tre will be one of the most fun players to watch in the 2022 class over the next 3 and a half seasons.
- Brady Dingess, Paintsville – Dingess is the veteran of this group. He started varsity at Sheldon Clark last season before moving to Paintsville and taking over the point guard duties there. Brady is a capable distributor and finisher but is limited as a shooter. Brady is shooting 41% from three but making less than one per game and is struggling with 57% shooting at the free throw line. He works hard and will be as good of a player as he can be but Dingess is not as athletic as many of the point guards in the class.
