In a much anticipated matchup, we did not think the score would look like this at the final buzzer but Gaithersburg came out on a mission and secured the win. Here I take a look at the 10 best from the game.
Best Performance | 2021 Jao Ituka | Gaithersburg
Jao did it all in beating Richard Montgomery hauling in 17 points and 18 rebounds. He was the strongest player on the court which allowed him to attack the lane and finish on top of defenders whenever he really wanted to. He has a go to spin move that was deadly in helping him separate from players. But ultimately it was his rebounding that was extremely impressive.
Best Offensive Performance | 2021 Jordan Hawkins | Gaithersburg
Jordan stood out from opening tip with the amount of length he brings onto the court. The 6’5 shooting guard has a game that will translate very well to the next level. He has a very efficient shot thanks to his nice stroke. He was dominant in knocking off Richard Montgomery finishing with 22 points. He also got after it on the boards and altered shots with his length. It was one of the most impressive scoring performances that I have seen this year.
Best Hustle Player | 2020 Devin Liyanamana | Richard Montgomery
Even though he only scored five points it was his hard playing that stood out. He had 5 rebounds, a steal and dove on the floor for loose balls. He would also go the extra mile and try to save balls that were going out of bounds. He might not be the biggest threat to score for Richard Montgomery but he gives it his all and will do anything asked by his coaches.
Best Inside Presence | 2019 Miles Gally | Richard Montgomery
Gaithersburg really did not have any size that could matchup with Gally and that was evident from the opening tip. He had 11 points, hauled in 5 rebounds and and 3 blocks. It is important to note that he also brought a solid leadership to the court.
Best Passer | 2021 Immanuel Page | Gaithersburg
Immanuel did a good job of getting the ball to Jordan and Jao and getting the offense going for Gaithersburg. He had one no look pass that caught everybody off guard and eventually led to a bucket for Gaithersburg.
Best Underclassmen on Richard Montgomery | 2021 Kordell Lewis | Richard Montgomery
Kordell was active on both sides of the ball and did a good job rebounding. He really stands out on defense and made it to difficult for Gaithersburg to get what they wanted on offense on a numerous occasions.
Best Player Off The Bench For Gaithersburg | 2019 Jehlani Thomas | Gaithersburg
Jehlani did not play that much for Gaithersburg but put in some solid minutes when needed. He is a guy that knows the offense, knows his role on defense and has the ability to go up and snag rebounds for his team. If asked to do more, he can fill that role too.
Best Player Off The Bench For Richard Montgomery | 2019 Djordje Orcev | Richard Montgomery
Djordje did not start this game for Richard Montgomery as he usually does but in this contest he came off the bench and definitely made a statement coming off the bench. He had 5 blocks and made himself known on the boards. Gaithersburg did hold him only to 2 points but he found other ways to contribute throughout the game.
Best Play | Jordan Hawkins Ice’s It For Gaithersburg
With a little over four minutes left in the game, Jao Ituka threw a pass out to Hawkins in transition and Jordan threw it down with Djorde Orcev right on his back trailing him. This sealed the victory for Gaithersburg and gave Richard Montgomery their first loss of the season.
Best Story From This Game
In a rematch of a tremendous game earlier in the year where Richard Montgomery won by 5, it was the home team in Gaithersburg that made a huge statement in winning by 19 to knock off Richard Montgomery for their first loss of the year. With both of these teams splitting the season series and if everything goes as planned, they should meet again in the 4A West Regional Championship Game.
