Here we recap this pivotal WCAC matchup by highlighting the 10 best.
BEST OFFENSIVE PERFORMANCE | TREVOR KEELS | PVI ’21
Keels was plagued by foul trouble in the first half, but was efficient with the ball and really got it going in the second stanza. The big wing showcased a smooth catch and shoot stroke from three, hitting four of five attempts from beyond the arc. Keels also got downhill into the paint with consistency, and finished strong in traffic.
BEST PLAYMAKER | DUG MCDANIEL | PVI ’22
McDaniel looked to be aggressive from the opening tip, and is still really learning how to control the tempo of the game, but did a nice job getting others involved while also getting his own. The freshman led the game in assists, but was also active and alert defensively.
BEST INSIDE PRESENCE | JOSH ODURO | PVI ’22
Oduro’s impact was limited in the first half, as he picked up three fouls prior to the end of the second quarter. The George Mason commit constantly boxed out his man and owned the defensive glass, but also did a nice job protecting the rim.
BEST SHOOTER | XAVIER JOYNER | PVI ’19
Joyner hit some timely shots throughout this game, connecting on 3 of 7 attempts from downtown. The unsigned senior really moves well without the ball and has a quick release.
BEST UNDER-THE-RADAR PERFORMANCE | WILLIAM PAIGE | PVI ’20
Paige impacted this game with his intangibles. The energetic sophomore has a nose for the ball, and recorded a handful of deflections to go along with at least 2 charges. Paige also was confident enough to take and make open shots.
BEST DEFENSIVE PERFORMANCE | AVERY FORD | PVI ’21
With Oduro out for a majority of the first half, Ford held down the paint defensively. He used his long limbs to his advantage and remained active with his hands, which made things difficult for whoever he was matched up with.
BEST UNDERCLASSMEN | DEVIN DINKINS | GONZAGA ’22
There were a lot of talented underclassmen playing in this game, but we decided to show some love to Devin Dinkins, who led Gonzaga in scoring and assists in the absence of their starting PG tonight. Dinkins is a confident shooter who shows promise as a reliable playmaker.
BEST MOTOR | ANWAR GILL | GONZAGA ’19
Gill did not have his best night offensively, but it wasn’t for a lack of effort. The unsigned senior did not settle and made it a point to get to the rim where he tried to apply as much pressure as possible on PVI’s defense.
BEST PLAY | JUDAH MINTZ | GONZAGA ’22
This play was not really relevant to the final result, but Judah Mintz had a nice throw down in the fourth quarter. The athletic freshman wing has just shown flashes of what he can do, but it will definitely be fun to see him improve and develop over time.
BEST STORY TO WATCH MOVING FORWARD
After this loss, Gonzaga now sits at 3-4, and is middle of the pack in the WCAC standings. It’s safe to say they’ve been hit in the mouth, but how will they respond? On the other hand, PVI has defied the odds, persevered through injuries, and remain unbeaten in conference play. How long can they keep this going?
