After a rusty start for both teams in the first quarter, Santa Fe took command on both ends of the floor in the second quarter and carried that energy through the remainder of the contest.
There were a few players for both teams that stepped up and stuck out in this early-season matchup.
Edmond Santa Fe
Ben Smith:
Smith’s stat line doesn’t look nearly as attractive as it could have due to some missed shots right around the bucket but one thing he did do was attack the offensive and defensive boards as well as provide tight physical interior defense. Smith made it extremely challenging for North to score in the paint.
He finished with four points, but pulled down 10 rebounds and blocked 3 shots.
Jaylen O’Conner:
Just like Vickers, O’Conner is a hard-nosed, hustle type of player. It’s clear he isn’t the focal point of Sante Fe’s offense but considering the Wolves will graduate four of their first six at the end of this season, O’Conner will play an important role in Santa Fe’s continued success moving forward. O’Conner finished Tuesday night’s game with 9 points, all coming in clutch moments.
Donovan Vickers:
Just like O’Conner, Vickers is definitely an energy guy for the Wolves. After watching this game, he’s the engine that makes this machine run. Set the tone to start the game on offense and provided lockdown defense on the Huskies, forcing 4 turnovers, 2 of which he stole himself. Vickers also scored 14 points.
Sean Franklin:
The youngest Wolves starter started the game a little timid but seemed to mellow out a little as the game progressed, He’s an athletic, young kid that clearly hasn’t matured into his skills yet but is definitely a talent to watch for in his final three years of high school. He finished the game with 8 points.
Edmond North
Elijah Nolan and Cameron Lee:
Both Nolan and Lee served as North’s 3-point threat. They connected on six threes combined and kept North alive in what could have easily been a blowout win by Santa Fe. There were times that Lee could have passed up the three for a better shot, but the Wolves made it hard for the Huskies to get any shot up within 15 feet of the basket. The duo combined for 19 points.
Landry Harris:
Harris controlled the offense for the Huskies the best he could. Santa Fe’s defense was smothering and the way he dealt with that was impressive. He was a constant source of offense for North, scoring 11 points.
