The Indians were eager to face two of the top prep schools in the country. They lost to Huntington Prep by four and IMG Academy by fifteen. However, in spite of defeat, Waxahachie still displayed incredible toughness and their willingness to compete. The Indians might not be the tallest team, but you can count on them to play the hardest. They have a great chance to make a deep run in playoffs if they play as hard as they did this weekend. Here are some of the players who performed well and who you need to lookout for as they look to make that deep run:
Indian Breakdown
C.J. Noland • 6’2″ • SG • Waxahachie • 2021 PHTX 50-2021 (43)
The sophomore guard had one of, if not the best performance of the event by dropping a 30-ball on Huntington Prep Friday night. He finished strong at the rim and hit shots off the catch from deep. Look for Noland to take a slight rise in the sophomore rankings after a stellar performance against a top national program.
J.T. Warren • 6’3″ • SF • Waxahachie • 2019 PHTX 200-2019 (82)
Coach Greg Gober looks to Warren for leadership since he is the player with the most varsity experience. The strongly-built unsigned senior shot the ball well from deep and finished through traffic in the paint as usual. Warren plays bigger than he is and the Indians will need his high motor on a consistent basis moving forward.
Mekai Pope • 6’0″ • SG • Waxahachie • 2020 PHTX 100-2020 (98)
It is good to see Pope back on the court after suffering an injury prior to the season. He displayed his confident stroke from deep in the Saturday night game vs. IMG Academy. Look for him to take on a more prominent perimeter scoring role heading into district play.
…Other Notables
B.J. Francis and Da’Mariae Watkins are other players to lookout for on this Indians squad. They are smaller guards who will get into opponents defensively and score off of spot-up threes and floaters offensively. The two guards play with a lot of energy on both ends. Consistent production from them is needed to help the Indians go far.
