There will be a lot of debate on who the top 10 teams in the state are, but a lot can change in the second half of the season. The best thing about Alabama high school basketball, is the fact that the best teams play the best teams in other classifications before getting into Area play. It is fun to watch a 1A or 2A power team play up and challenge the 5A, 6A, and 7A teams.
1. Mountain Brook (11-1): Without question Mountain Brook is the alpha program in state. With 2019 5 star forward Trendon Watford and the 2020 backcourt of Colby Jones and Paul Stramaglia leading the way, Mountain Brook is poised to three peat as 7A state champion.
2. Wenonah (15-2): Who is the only team to beat Mountain Brook this year? Wenonah. The Dragons are the team to beat in 5A. Cameron Tucker, Justin Minter, and JD Eatmon lead the way for Wenonah.
3. Sidney Lanier (10-1): Right now, Lanier looks like the team to beat in 6A. Sidney Lanier is lead by 2019 Kendon Knight and the 2020 trio of Rongie Gordon, Antwan Burnett, and Jamari Smith.
4. Florence (12-1): Florence has the fire power to challenge any team. The Falcons are lead by the 2019 trio of Kareem Thompson, Cadarrius Thompson, Charlie Champagne, and 2020 Dee Beckwith.
5. Lee Huntsville (8-3): Lee Huntsville always has a challenging scheduling. The generals have the roster to play with anyone. Lee Huntsville is lead by 2019 4 star Kobe Brown, 2019 Mason Ellison, and 2021 Kaleb Brown.
6. Deshler (7-0): Deshler has a dynamic offense that features 2019 JP Robinson (28.3 ppg). Jalin Johnson (2019), Kevon Summerhill (2019), and Sawyer Wright (2020) are also critical components.
7. Lee Montgomery (11-2): Lee is a team that no one wants to face. Murray State signee Demond Robinson is a load to handle. Darryl Brown (2019), Isaiah Fenn (2019), and De’Marquiese Miles (2020) are also players to watch.
8. Decatur Heritage (12-2): Decatur Heritage is one of the best teams 1-3A. DCHA has impressive wins over Huffman and Red Bay. 2019 Noah Boler and 2020 Giancarlo Valdez are the key players for DCHA.
9. Prattville Christian (11-2): PCA has played teams all over the state, including Mountain Brook. The Cats are poised for a deep run. 2019 studs Cooper Meadows and BJ Comer lead the way for PCA.
10. Red Bay (10-1): Red Bay’s lone defeat comes to Decatur Heritage. The Tigers have a high scoring offense lead by Gath Weatherford (2019), Colton Corum (2019), and Braden Ray (2021). The upcoming game with Deshler should be a fun one to watch.
