A look at the standouts from Day 2.
Josh Green (IMG)
The stretch passing of 2019 guard Josh Green was on display all game in the victory over Gray Collegiate. The Arizona signee totaled a team-high 22 points on 9-of-12 shooting which included 4-of-6 from deep. Green had seven assists and four steals scrapping all afternoon for the deep and athletic Ascenders unit. Look for Green to continue to do his part for the tournament favorite IMG.
Malachi Wideman (Riverview)
In the early afternoon consolation game, 2020 guard Malachi Wideman did his best to keep Riverview afloat against Woodrow Wilson. The junior guard had 22 points and seven boards. He was a frequent visitor at the free throw line in the third quarter and put a nice run of points together before the half. Wideman is at his best when he’s a pure attacker and we witnessed playing of that today.
Makhel & Makhi Mitchell (D.C. Woodrow Wilson)
The 2019 twin duo Makhel and Makhi Mitchell are both going to Maryland next fall, but first was a true test at the City of Palms. After losing on Monday, it was Makhel who proved to be the more frequent point getter with his 21 point, 10 rebound day. He was efficient, shooting 8-of-10 from the field. His brother Makhi had 12 points and eight rebounds and is always going to give you good minutes.
Jordan Clark (Booker)
In a game that got out of hand early for Booker against West Oaks, 2019 guard Jordan Clark proved to be the most consistent threat for the Tornadoes. The senior is a reliable threat who doesn’t do anything overpowering, but he’s solid and can mix it up with the best of them. We saw that with his 24 points outing, 12 in each half.
Jace Howard & Roger McFarlane (University)
Pacing the floor alongside 2019 forward Vernon Carey Jr. (35 points) and 2020 guard Scottie Barnes (13 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists) were 2020 guard Jace Howard was superb in this, especially in the first half with 11 points early in the second quarter. He finished with 19 points and nine rebounds and was very active all game. As for 2020 guard Roger McFarlane, he mixed in nicely with 16 points as he led University with the most free throws attempted (6-of-8) and was very aggressive.
Dahmir Bishop & Chereef Knox (Pennsylvania Imhotep)
Both Imhotep and Osceola shot just a tad over 20 percent from the field as teams. However, it was Imhotep who pulled away in the second half and found some offensive groove. A pair of 2019 starters had a nice overall day with Xavier signee Dahmir Bishop (13 points) and Chereef Knox (14 points). Knox was awfully active on the boards with nine rebounds and as a keen attacker while Bishop was fluid in transition with his elusiveness.
Diego Rivera (Miami Christian)
In a game that didn’t go Miami Christian’s way, I was pleasantly surprised with 2019 guard Diego Rivera. He netted 23 of his team’s 48 points in the loss to McEachern. Rivera did all the dirty work for his team, being a vocal leader, shooting smart jumpers and simply controlling the tempo.
Trevor Keels (Virginia Paul VI)
Backing up his No. 22 national ranking spot (by Prep Hoops), 2021 guard Trevor Keels did a lot of the leg work for Paul VI in the nightcap win over Immaculate Conception scoring 18 points. 2020 guard Josiah “Jojo” Freeman paced him with 15 points. Also, impressive 2022 guard Knasir McDaniel added 11 points.
Jayden Brown (New Jersey Immaculate Conception)
The smallest guy on the floor was the top scorer for Immaculate Conception, Jayden Brown, a crafty and tough minded 2021 guard standing at 5’11”. He had 15 points while fellow 2021 guard Amar’e Marshall also finished with 15 points. 2020 6’10” forward Elijah Hutchins-Everett did dirty work inside with 11 points.
