The late start appeared to play a factor as both teams struggled to find energy and knock down shots early. Moberly was looking for opportunities to speed up the game, but a methodical Warrensburg group kept the pace to their liking and the two teams went into the half all knotted up at 27. In the third quarter the tides began to turn as Warrensburg 5’10 Sr G Luke Mackey put on an absolute pick and roll clinic, and the Tigers pulled away late for a 63-54 win. The senior stars for both teams were on display in this one. Here’s the scoop on tonight’s top performances.
5’10 Sr Luke Mackey – Warrensburg
Luke was brilliant tonight on both ends and was the catalyst for the Tigers big win. He was unstoppable in the pick and roll. The high IQ point guard made the right decision every possession, whether it was dropping a dime to a teammate or getting his defender of their feet and scoring in the paint. Luke has a tight handle and is very fundamentally sound. He also played tremendous on ball defense all night constantly frustrating the Moberly guards. Luke finished the night with 15 points and several impressive assists.
6’5 Sr Luke Landwehr – Warrensburg
The Tigers “other” Luke was named the MVP of tonight’s game at the Norm Stewart classic where he had 13 points and 5 boards. He displayed a versatile skill set. He has a quick release and can knock it down from the outside. He can put it on the floor and finish. He even served as a post/pop threat in the pick and roll. With good size, he was aggressive on the glass and can finish with contact.
6’0 Sr Peyton Long – Warrensburg
Peyton is a knockdown shooter from distance with a quick trigger. Good form and good release. Moberly closed hard and Peyton showed the ability to shot fake and drive and flashed an impressive floater game. He had 13 big points in the Tigers win.
6’3 Sr Braedan Wetrich – Moberly
Braedan is a long, rangy wing who can score in any way. He has great elevation and range on his jumper. Very good catch and shoot off screens and gets nice separation on his dribble pull-ups. He was also able to attack off the dribble and use his length and size to finish at the bucket where he had back to back baskets with a foul. He scored 15 for the Spartans.
6’4 Sr Trey Koester – Moberly
The leading scorer for the Spartans scored all 17 of his points around the bucket or at the foul line. He’s very athletic and was able to slice and dice his way through a pesky Warrensburg defense for some impressive finishes. He was big on the defensive end as well where he cleaned up the boards and had two highlight caliber blocks at the rim.
6’3 Savion Thorpe – Moberly
The uber-talented wing had to earn each of his 12 points for Moberly tonight. It’s clear that he has the ability to create offense in multiple ways. While he was held in check most of the first half, he turned it on and posted double figures in the second half to keep the Spartans in the game. He is at his best in open space. Smooth ball handler and athletic finisher.
