Donzello Barros of Como Park. The Cougars kicked off the year with a win over Washburn and Donn Ward scored 26. Donn is by now not a sleeper (we’ve spent a lot of time talking about him here) but fellow senior returning double figure producer Donzello Barros is a player that should hit the radar of people soon. Good leader, solid shooter, loves to pressure the ball and verbally lead his team.
Ezra Blumer of St. Croix Lutheran. Blumer, a 6-foot guard, is the one returning starter for the Crusaders. Ezra scored 11 points a game last year shooting 42 percent from behind the arc. Blumer was also one of the team’s top defenders last year as he plays the game with a load of energy. The Crusaders have much to replace but their backcourt will be tough with Blumer, Norman Strickland, Owen Bushaw, and Xavier Garcia among others.
Jacob Brenzy of St. Agnes. At six feet tall as a sophomore Jacob was one of the betters shooters in the city of St. Paul last year making 40 percent of his attempts. Brenzy is the leading returning scorer for the Aggies (just under nine a game last year) and the team has big expectations for the junior this season.
Will Burke of Cretin-Derham Hall. You’ve likely seen Will Burke catch touchdown passes for the Raider football team but now that he’s caught his five passes in the end zone it’s hoops season. Today Burke started for the Raiders as a 6-foot-3 junior forward using the toughness and agility that allowed him to also excel on the football field.
Andrew Chambers of Hill-Murray. Chambers played some as a freshman off the bench in 17-18 bit mostly developed as a JV player. He’s now a key member of the varsity as a sophomore and although their first game of the season was tough, Chambers was the lone Pioneer in double figures.
Mathieu LaFrombois of Nova Classical. Senior guard that was just under double figures per game last season, Mathieu started his senior year with 23 points against St. Paul Academy in the season opener. Our friend TC Hoops Czar noted that 14 of those points came in the first half. Great start to the season for Mathieu.
Luke McElroy of St. Paul Central. By now if you are an NHR reader you know that Central has a trio of double figure scorers back in Daveonte Davis, Dion Ford, and Ronnelle Porter. This team returns more than that. Six-foot-3 Luke McElroy is another returning starter who was honored with all conference last year scoring just under ten a game and five boards a contest. Tough wing.
Abdalla Mohamed of St. Paul Highland Park. At 6-foot-6 the game really started to come to Mohamed as a junior. He began to score four times a game giving the Scots an inside option. By the end of the year the league gave him honorable mention honors and now he should be able to take pressure off of Evan Brodtman this year regularly.
Simeon Sharp of St. Paul Harding. As a sophomore Sharp was a 6-foot-2 all conference player slashing his way to nearly 13 points a game and an all league honor. Sharp has the ability to give Harding about 18 a game this year pairing well with lead guard Jovan Christian.
