Continue ReadingThe folks at Torrey Pines have created a nice tradition with the pre-Holiday Classic showcase, a one-day event featuring many of San Diego’s top teams. This year, La Jolla Country Day, Vista, Foothills Christian, Torrey Pines, Mission Bay and Francis Parker competed in the three-game event on Dec. 22.
Two of the games – Country Day’s win over Vista and Mission Bay’s win over Parker – were blowouts. Torrey Pines and Foothills Christian, however, played one of the best games in Southern California this year, with the Knights emerging victorious in a 90-89 double OT thriller.
Here are the standouts from the event.
The Holiday Classic Showcase – Event Standouts
Ryan Langborg, 6-4 G, La Jolla Country Day
Langborg set the tone early for the Torreys with an emphatic transition slam, a deep three and a midrange pull-up, as the Torreys went up 20-2 on Vista and never looked back. He finished with 20 points, scoring it from all three levels.
Raymond Lu, 5-9 PG, La Jolla Country Day
If Langborg started the game with a bang, Lu ended it with a flourish. Controlling the offense with excellent pace and decision making, Lu racked up assist after assist, with seconds on the shot clock, a clinic in game management. He finished with 13 assists – and only two turnovers – for the Torreys.
Bryce Pope, 6-3 G, Torrey Pines
Pope’s offensive exploits are becoming the stuff of lore. In the double OT thriller against Foothills Christian, he repeatedly hit big shot after big shot from all three levels, including the running bank shot to put the game into the second bonus session. The UCSD commit finished with 34 points.
Michael Pope, 6-3 G, Torrey Pines
Michael Pope also hit his share of big shots in the 90-89 double OT defeat against Foothills Christian. None of the shots were bigger than the 25-footer he sank to beat the shot clock in the fourth quarter, and the 24-footer he hit to give the Falcons a shot to win it in the second OT. He finished with 23 points.
DJ Carter Hollinger, 6-6 W, Foothills Christian
The best athlete on the floor for both teams, Carter Hollinger’s presence on the boards was huge for the undersized Knights. The Montana signee also hit big shots off the bounce, and finished on the offensive glass several times, including a big shot in double OT. Carter-Hollinger finished with 18 points and 12 rebounds.
Yassine Gharram, 6-3 PG, Foothills Christian
Gharram is rapidly becoming one of the best floor generals in the 2020 class. His poise, leadership and efficiency shined through in the game, scoring 34 points on 13-23 shooting, and dropping 6 assists against three turnovers. His defense, especially at the top of the Knights zone in the 4th quarter, proved pivotal in turning the game around for the victors.
Boogie Ellis, 6-3 G, Mission Bay
After a pair of lackluster performances in the Bucs games against Rancho Christian and Chino Hills, Ellis established himself as the best player on the floor in the first half, in which he torched Francis Parker for 25 points. He confidently stuck shots from NBA range, and knocked down midrange pull-ups to boot. The Duke signee finished with 35 points.
