There were some standout performances from unexpected players and a couple of stars who performed at their usual high level. Here are the 8 best performances I saw on Saturday in Richmond.
- Beechwood’s Cole Busald – Typically a reserve guard for the Tigers, Busald was pushed into a bigger role on Saturday due to a teammates’ injury. Cole rose to the challenge, hitting a perfect 5-5 from behind the arc for a team high 15 points. Beyond his offense, Busald made all the right decisions and limited turnovers against an aggressive Lexington Catholic press.
- Lexington Catholic’s Brice Scott – The 6’5 Senior post for the Knights had a big game scoring on the block and grabbed several rebounds. Beechwood didn’t have an answer for Scott’s physicality down low and he thrived throughout the game, recording a double-double.
- Waggener’s JJ Kalakon – JJ showed his all around game on Saturday as he played the point a lot on offense then guarded 6’10 Ray Surratt on the defensive end. Kalakon ended with 23 points and 12 rebounds while shooting 8/17 from the field including 3/4 from 3. The 6’4 Senior is very available and will be a steal as a Spring signee.
- Lafayette’s Ray Surratt – The Generals Junior big man went 8/13 from the field for 18 points and added 8 rebounds and a steal. He had the best performance of the day for Lafayette by far but still has issues with conditioning that limits how many minutes per game he plays. Ray was finishing almost everything at the rim and was a match-up nightmare for a smaller Waggener team.
- Lincoln County’s Bryston Alcorn – The lanky Junior went 6/7 from the field and a perfect 3/3 from 3 on his way to a team high 20 points in a 30 point win over Madison Southern. When he and the other Lincoln County guards are hitting 3s like they were on Saturday, they are tough to beat.
- Madison Southern’s Trent Moberly – Moberly’s playing time was limited due to the nature of the game but he finished with 13 points and 4 rebounds for an Eagles team that suffered through a running clock for a large portion of the second half.
- Somerset’s Kade Grundy – Grundy is not shy. He got up 23 shots on his way to 21 points Saturday. His form was good but he only shot 5/14 from 3. His teammate Chase Walker had better shooting percentages on his way to 21 points but there is no doubt that Grundy is the alpha on his team and was only a few rimmed out threes away from a 30+ point game.
- Madison Central’s Isaiah Cozart – The Indians do a tremendous job of feeding the post as much as possible and Cozart gets the benefit of all those post touches. Isaiah ended with 25 points on 11/21 shooting and added 17 rebounds as well. If he made his free throws he would have had a 30 point game. On the night that he was honored for breaking the all time blocked shots record, Isaiah’s offense carried the Indians to a win.
