Tuesday provided another exciting matchup as the top two teams in 5A faced off. #1 Mansfield Timberview traveled to Justin, Texas (near Fort Worth) to face #2 Justin Northwest. The Wolves came into the game undefeated with thirteen wins. The Texans entered the game with a record of twelve wins and three losses. With WFAA broadcasting the game on Facebook live with excellent play-by-commentary by Mike Leslie and Landon Haaf, it was bound to be a great game.
In the first quarter, it was nearly all Timberview. The Texans’ star guard Avery Anderson III committed three fouls and sat out the rest of the half.
During the second quarter, the Texans battled back and went on a 17-4 run to take the lead behind the play of senior big man Sammy Freeman and junior guard Julien Smith.
Anderson returned at the start of the second half scoring seven of his team’s nine points in the third quarter. Each team scored the exact amount of points in the period going into the fourth.
Timberview took their first lead of the second half with 90 seconds left in the game and secured it. The T’Wolves for the most part converted at the charity stripe and valued the basketball when it mattered most. Those factors are what earned them the win and title as current number one team in 5A.
????Players of the Game????
Tristan Starks / 6’1″ / SG / Mansfield Timberview / 2019
Starks did a great job of doing everything needed by the coaching staff. He finished plays in transition, rebounded, and defended well on and off the ball. The unsigned senior is awarded our player of the game. Starks finished with a team-high 17 points along with eight rebounds and five steals.
Sammy Freeman / 6’10″ / C / Justin Northwest / 2019
⭐⭐⭐
Landon Haaf said it best when he stated, “Freeman is paying rent above the rim because he is living there.” The senior big man had his own jam fest and was corralling every board he could get a hold of. His struggles from the free throw line were key in the loss and he clearly needs to improve in that aspect of his game. However, his motor is consistently high and he will be a force to be reckoned with going into district play next semester. Freeman played like the best prospect on the floor and finished with 14 points, fifteen rebounds and five blocks.
*Both teams will possibly get a chance to meet up again in the regional final*
