Continue ReadingNovember was a purposefully truncated month of high school basketball in Tennessee. The season contains many twists and turns in the coming months, but these 10 teams emitted basketball radiance in the opening two weeks.
- Bartlett — The Panthers of Bartlett High swept through Arkansas-based Rumble on the Ridge at Forrest City High School. Now that they added Antavion Collum Bartlett deserves Class AAA respect with Memphis East and Whitehaven. It could be a special year in the northeastern Memphis suburb.
- Franklin — Reese Glover. The scoring ability of Reese gets better monthly. Thirty point nights are the norm in Rebel Country. Glover’s team added two important frontcourt pieces in the offseason: Ahsharri Haynesworth and Matthew Thurman.
- Riverdale — One nightmarish road loss to Stone Memorial aside Riverdale is again crippling opposing offenses. Team depth is better than last year and the senior-laden starting lineup can win many close contests. The Warriors already beat McCallie, Dickson County, MBA, and Lebanon.
- Memphis East — “The guards played well recently. Before that everything was really on Wiseman and Dandridge. To close out November with a win over Raleigh-Egypt is (impressive),” viewed Courtney Asher Smith.
- Columbia Academy — From inside the Columbia Academy camp there is excitement. Both players and coaches alike understand their roles and are embracing the pecking order. Carson Cary is off to a blistering start.
- Loudon — Situated near I-75, Loudon High School is hosting some lovely basketball this winter. Only Meigs County finished within 10 points of LHS in November. Loudon’s Redskins compete in Class AA and might have an outside shot at returning to the Class AA State Finals for the first time in 30 years. Wins include: Anderson County, Tellico Plains, Greenback.
- McGavock — After a 10-11 season, McGavock truly improved their team composition in the last year. Marvin Hughes was very good as a sophomore, but now plays incredibly well. His physicality improved enough in the last few months to help him overpower not just guards, but wings too.
- Briarcrest Christian — Briarcrest Christian only played four games in November and although they won the quartet the Saints didn’t play very difficult opponents. BCHS downed Kirby, Kingsbury, Power Center, and Jackson Prep (MS).
- Wooddale — “Wooddale’s best win was at Whitehaven,” said Smith. The Cardinals began the season 5-1 with a completely new team, star, and coach. Chandler Lawson, Johnathan Lawson, and Johnathan Duncan combine to score the majority of the points.
- Christian Brothers — Melrose easily knocked aside CBHS at the Jerry Peters Classic, 77-53. It was the only CBHS November loss. Together the guard-driven outfit knocked off Arlington, Houston, ECS, Jackson Prep (MS), Pope John II, and MBA.
