With the season underway and closing in on the Holiday Break, Prep Hoops takes a look at several small school guards who have raised their profile in the early stages of the season.
Brendon Dewey, 6’4, F, 2019, Cheney
He’s a bit undersized for a college forward prospect, but Dewey has a terrific basketball frame with long arm, an athletic build and a lot of hops in his step. Film shows a player who can throw down impressive slams and play above the rim at both ends of the floor. He has helped Cheney start the season 6-1 and a No. 2 ranking in Kansas 3A.
Aaron Higginbotham, 6’5, G/F, 2019, St. Mary’s Colgan @aaronhiggy21
Higginbotham is a skilled forward with a well-rounded game. He is capable of coming of screens and the ability to knock down outside shots, but can also put the ball on the floor a little and attack the basket.
Carlos Montiel, 6’3, G/F, 2019, Hugoton @cbrandonm23
Montiel is a unique, inside-out player blessed with a big frame and a versatile, well-rounded skill set. Montiel can handle the ball well, can shoot from distance and has the ability to put the ball on the floor and make plays. He has good court vision and the ability to see the floor and can fill up a stat sheet with points, rebounds and assists.
Andrew O’Brien, 6’6, G/F, 2019, Halstead. @andrewob13
One of the state’s most underrated wing players, O’Brien can do a little bit of everything. He shoots it well with good form and balance, has the ability to see over the defense and deliver smart passes and defensively, O’Brien can cover up a guard or block shots around the basket.
Creed Puyear, 6’5, F, 2019, Stanton County @CreedPuyear
Puyear is an athletic wing player capable of throwing down dunks, stepping out and knocking down outside shots and moves well off the ball. He is averaging nearly 20 points, 7.8 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game this season.
Zeth Unruh, 6’6, F, 2019, Jefferson West
Uruh has terrific size and good athleticism and some skill as an all-around player. He averages 7.8 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists through the first four games for a Jefferson West squad that has opened 2-3.
