“Wofford assistant coach came to watch Marvin practice today,” shared McGavock High School Head Basketball Coach Paul Childress.
Wofford astutly identified Marvin as an exceptional mid-major prospect with flecks of high-major potential. In fact, Wofford’s best shot with Marvin was and is to get in very early and summon a verbal commitment prior to the 17u AAU season. Mid-majors can shoo away “bigger” schools with high quality early evaluations.
Recruiting Fire
Southern Conference power Wofford College sent Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach Kevin Giltner to Nashville, Tennessee Thursday. His main purpose was to evaluate the fourth best prospect in the Class of 2020, Marvin Hughes.
“Kevin Giltner is coaching his sixth season for Wofford and fifth as an assistant coach after serving as DoBO in 2013-2014. Giltner’s primary coaching focus is guard instruction. How convenient!
Marvin is a guard. In fact, Marvin is one of the best guards in the state of Tennessee.
Coach Giltner is an excellent pitchman for Wofford because he also played for Wofford not all that long ago. Coach Giltner used to be starting guard Kevin Giltner for Wofford. He helped win the Southern Conference Championship in 2010 and 2011. These were the first two conference championships for Wofford. At the time they were miraculous and the beginning of something special at the small South Carolina Division I college.
Winning conference titles is no longer than unusual in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Coach Giltner helped coach his Terriers to conference titles in 2013 and 2014.
Kevin Giltner also used to be a high school guard in Tennessee. Giltner played for Harpeth High School, graduating ten years ago. He can speak to many of the experiences Marvin is going through and would go through if he chose Wofford.
Another former prospect from the state of Tennessee knows.
Nathan Hoover plays for Wofford College. He is the lone Tennessee-representative on the team. Wofford plucked him from an even more distant geographic location, Arlington High School of Arlington, Tennessee.
Piles of Points
Midway through 2017-2018, his sophomore season, Marvin Hughes surpassed the 1,000 point mark. Keep in mind over 90% of the players who reach that milestone are seniors and Keon Johnson (PrepHoopsTN #1) and Marvin Hughes high jumped over that bar very, very early.
“He already has 338 points this season,” said Coach Childress. “I will have to get last years book and see what he ended up with over 1,000 last year.”
Considering his fast-paced scoring start the question Coach Childress was answering was ‘Do you think he is near 1,500 already? Or will get over that this year?’
“Definitely.”
Coach Childress even foresees Hughes “ending up with over 3,000 his senior year if he stays healthy.”
Tracking Wofford Staff
Another Wofford Assistant Coach spent the day in Tennessee. Coach Will Murphy skipped down to Bell Buckle, Tennessee to see J.J. Platt work out. Platt is a starting guard for Webb School. Coach Murphy is originally from Murfreesboro, Tennessee and typically recruits Virginia, North Carolina, and Ohio.
Tennessee is bringing in D1 coaches en masse.
