There were plenty of quality players at the event, that brings together some of the best talent in the Southeast part of the state. Here is a look at my First Five after Thursday night’s games:
PG: Kevin Jones 5’11” Sikeston (’19) – The hard driving guard scored a team-high 19 points on seven of 12 shooting from the field, including three 3-pointers. His 3-point shooting has really improved over the past year. He is a relentless competitor who plays the game with Russell Westbrook-like intensity. He really fuels the Bulldogs’ full-court pressure defense.
SG: Owen Long 6’2″ Sikeston (’19) – The smooth lefty tied Jones for team high honors with 19 points and made five of nine from range. Not only does he shoot it well off the catch, but he walked into a couple of nice 3-pointers off the dribble in full rhythm. He is a solid ball handler and passer who plays the game with a lot of confidence.
SF- Kinyon Hodges 6’2″ Cape Girardeau Central (’19) – The smooth wing had 17 points, six rebounds and four steals in the victory over Poplar Bluff. He is an athletic slasher who gets to the basket well and finishes strong at the rim. He had two impressive transitions dunks on the evening.
PF: Dominique Hardimon 6’3″ Poplar Bluff (’19) – The bull moose of a combo forward had 16 points and eight rebounds against Cape Central before fouling out late in the game. He was a force on the offensive glass, especially in the first half. He is a matchup problem with his ability to handle the ball and muscle his way to the basket and finish through contact. He plays much bigger than his size.
C: Trey Jenkins 6’7″ Sikeston (’19) – The athletic big had 12 points and some highlight reel dunks for the Bulldogs, including a one-handed throw-down off of an inbounds pass. Trey has developed well over the course of his career from a raw shot-blocking freshman to a scoring big who can get buckets in the post or step out and knock down the 3-pointer.
