Continue ReadingScott County is the consensus favorite to win the 2019 KHSAA State Championship and so far they’ve given no reason to doubt them. Friday night was no different as they rolled to a running clock victory over 6th region contender Fern Creek. Here are my biggest takeaways from Friday night’s contest.
- Scott County has incredible balance on offense. The Cardinals got production from several players on the way to their 86-61 win on Friday. Senior Michael Moreno led them with 20 points, 11 rebounds and 6 assists. Fellow Senior Cam Fluker added 14 points, Senior Glenn Covington hit three threes as he continues to knock the rust off after a long football season. Yet another Senior, Diablo Stewart hit double figures with 11 points and was credited with 5 assists. The Cards start 5 seniors and bring another two Seniors and two juniors off the bench. They may be the deepest team in the state and that’s why so many pick them to win the state title in March.
- Fern Creek is at least a year away. Sophomores Jaden Rogers (25 points) and Darrius Washington (12 points) hit double figures and Sophomore Zeke Montgomery looked good in stretches for the Tigers as he finished with 11. Freshman Andru Markham showed no fear in going head to head with the Seniors of Scott County. I say all that to say that I don’t think Fern Creek is ready to compete for a 6th region title this season. It’s only December and they will keep improving but I think next season will be when we see Coach Schooler’s team as viable contenders to get back to Rupp Arena.
- If you can’t take care of the ball, you have no chance against Scott County. Fern Creek had 16 turnovers in the first half. The game was over before the halftime break and the running clock took affect early in the second half. Scott was trapping in the full court and in the half court. In the few possessions that Creek didn’t turn it over, they got good looks and scored. The pressure lessened in the second half but I’d bet the Tigers finished near 30 turnovers for the game. The recipe for winning in Georgetown includes being able to handle pressure and limit the points of turnovers for Scott County.
- Michael Moreno outworked Darrius Washington – Moreno was about an inch shorter than the Sophomore from Louisville. They were probably about the same weight but Michael used his post skill, positioning and his teammates screens to dominate the paint against Darrius. By no means did Darrius play badly but Moreno put on a post clinic as he worked for position and showed a polished post game as he dominated on the block and even stretched out to hit a three on his way to a team high 20 points. Darrius is our second ranked player in the 2021 rankings and competing against players like Michael Moreno will only make him better as he develops.
- Scott County has a realistic shot to go undefeated this season. They’re proving to be head and shoulders above everyone they’ve played this season. There doesn’t appear to be anyone in the 11th region that can test them and if they get through the Beach Ball Classic this week without a loss, they may not take one this season. Especially with David Johnson potentially missing time for Trinity. I’m not predicting the perfect season yet but it’s starting to get into the realm of possibility. They appear extra motivated after falling short of the Championship this past March.
