After a recent tough loss to Banks earlier this year, the rock-solid 6-foot-7, 215-pound forward knew he had to rally up his Stayton teammates. Nichol and the Eagles have since buckled up and are currently riding a four-game winning streak heading into the holiday tournament season.
“It’s been a roller coaster start to say the start but I know that it’s early still and we’re building – there’s still some chemistry to be made,” Nichol said. “Personally, I’m the leader of the team and I’m pretty proud of that. (Coach) Kiser and I have a great relationship and I’m just looking forward to what we can do further on in the season.”
Individually, Nichol has been focused on doing whatever he can to help the team. If he needs to score down low or hit face-up jumpers, he’ll do that. If the focus on rebounding and defense is needed, he will do that instead. “I’m just been well-balanced – I pride myself on that,” Nichol said. “Mostly I’ve been proud of my leadership that I’ve developed over the years.”
Nichol continues to hear from college coaches about the possibility of playing for them. In a home game recently against Molalla, Puget Sound came to watch him play. As others such as Linfield have been in contact with Nichol, Puget Sound remains a very viable option for him. “They’re a great group of guys and I felt like home when I made my visit,” Nichol said. “But I’m always open for other opportunities.”
One opportunity Nichol would love is for Stayton to make it to the state tournament. It’s something he and fellow senior teammate Kaleb Anundi have set their eyes on for a very long time. “We’ve been talking about it ever since we were ten years old, Kaleb and I leading the team to success,” Nichol said. “I think this is our year for that, no doubt about that.”
Nichol currently ranks as the #45 player in the PrepHoops Class of 2019 rankings.
