The talented 6-foot-4, 175-pound guard had injured his hand and it cost him the opportunity to play AAU ball during the summer months. But Amato has all healed up now and has been on the court for Central Catholic High School, looking at leading the Rams to some wins and recapture the attention of college coaches his junior year.
At a recent Central Catholic practice, we caught up with Amato and asked him about his hand. “My hand is pretty much back to normal,” Amato said. “Sometimes when I shoot, it’s a little awkward on the ball but otherwise it’s fine and it’s mostly back to normal.”
Amato’s hand was hurt during the summer, but it was good enough in September for him to participate fully in the prestigious Prime Time Top 40 Showcase in September. “It was cool playing with all the kids I’ve played with since I was younger as well as some new faces,” Amato said. “It was a lot of competition and it was a fun experience.”
Since then, Amato has been going full on with Central Catholic. He still holds a scholarship offer from Eastern Washington and has been in contact with them. Portland has also shown interest, having come to watch a few practices and the Pilots plan on visiting a few games this season. “Not playing summer ball kinda hurt my recruitment,” Amato said. “But hopefully this season it will pick back up.”
A big year would certainly help and despite a tough start as the Rams have competed against the state’s best in Jefferson, Jesuit, and West Linn, Amato feels the ceiling is high. “Talent-wise, I think we’re up there with the top teams,” Amato said. “I think we have a lot to prove still, but I think we can be pretty good. I want to make first team Mt Hood and lead the conference in assists. I like to play-make and set people up.”
Amato currently ranks as the #7 player in the PrepHoops Class of 2020 rankings.
