The hard-working 6-foot-7, 245-pound forward recently showed off his skills as the Les Schwab Invitational “The Eight” Tournament in Hillsboro, Oregon this past weekend.
“We’ve started out really good, playing really well together,” Barker said. “We’re playing against Rainer Beach and O’Dea coming up so we’re getting ready for those games. I definitely feel like I’ve developed more as a player as I’m more aggressive and looking to shoot more. Also, I’m in better shape than last year.”
At the tournament, Barker was rock-solid, averaging 10.3 points and 5.3 rebounds in three games as Eastside Catholic captured the championship. But as he plays on this season, Barker is also sorting through his college recruitment. He currently lists D-III programs such Lewis & Clark, Puget Sound, George Fox, and Redlands as options but recently he also received a preferred walk-on offer from Eastern Washington which adds to the intrigue.
“I’ve taken visits to all of the schools except for Eastern,” Barker said. “I’m open to the (walk-on) offer from them but I’ve got to get a look at the school first and find out more about it before I make my decision.”
Location and how he meshes with the coaches and players are just some of the key factors he’ll be looking at when it comes down to making a final decision. But first things first, Eastside Catholic has some goals this year and Barker is looking to do whatever he can do to help his team achieve them.
“We definitely want to go far to state and we’re hoping to win it this year,” Barker said. “We’ve got the right group and the right guys for it, we just need to play hard and focus on the same goal.”
