But Brian Warinner chose to wait on his college decision, choosing to play out this season and see where things lay in the spring. The steady 6-foot-7, 185-pound forward from Bend has been enjoying things thus far as the Lava Bears have gotten off to a quick start and are ready to venture into league play.
“It’s been pretty solid,” Warinner said. “We’ve had some injury troubles as a team, so it’s been nice to be able to step up and play with our lineups and get to play with different guys. I’ve been feeling pretty good about it.”
Warinner and his teammates recently came up to the Portland area to compete in the Mounstainside tournament. In their first game against Clackamas, Warinner tallied team highs with 20 points, ten rebounds, and four assists, as the Lava Bears made a late charge to force overtime and eventually beat Clackamas. In the game, Warinner was tough around the basket but also played unselfishly, finding open teammates out on the perimeter for threes when he was doubled.
Colleges have long been intrigued with Warinner’s versatility and he continues to maintain contact with schools at all different levels. He has offers from D-II Academy of Art in San Francisco and NAIA Lewis-Clark State and other D-III schools such as George Fox, Redlands, and Emory are all in the mix. Recently though another school decided to jump in much to Warinner’s surprise and pleasure.
“No more new offers but Incarnate Word in Texas has started to talk to me,” Warinner said. “They’re D-I and I’m happy about it. I’m not sure where the connection came but my dad has been really good about sending film out to people to help me get recruited. It’s mostly been about relationship building stuff so we’ll see where that goes.”
After the holidays, Bend goes into league play and Warinner is looking forward to what lies ahead for him and the Lava Bears. “I’m really excited about – we’re not going to be playing the same teams three times like it used to be,” Warinner said. “It’s going to be better competition against some of my teammates from AAU, so I’m really excited about it. I think it will be fun.”
Warinner currently ranks as the #5 player in the PrepHoops Class of 2019.
