Led by the all-around 6-foot-2 guard, the Storm bounced back to win their next three games and capture the Consolation Bracket championship. It was a banner tournament for the senior nicknamed “Schu”, who is excited about what’s ahead for his team and himself.
“We’re thankful as a team to be here as it’s been awhile since a Vancouver team came out here,” Schumacher said. “Coming out with confidence has been big for us. We just came out strong.”
Schumacher certainly came out strong individually. Over the four games, he averaged 23.3 points and 6.5 rebounds, shooting 46.9 percent from the field, 44.4 percent from three, and 80.8 percent from the field. While he didn’t get named to the All-Tournament Team, he must have been one of the final cuts.
“I’ve been playing more confident,” Schumacher said. “I’ve been trying to get to the hoop more and get to the line. I’ve been struggling with my free throws a little bit but (here) I’ve been doing pretty good.”
On the recruiting front, Schumacher noted that he’s been in constant contact with Division II programs such as Western Oregon, St. Martin’s, and Chaminade. Recently Division I Furman reached out which he was excited about. Schumacher is keeping things open and will make a decision after the season has completed.
From here, the Storm go on to league play and Schumacher believes the experience at the LSI will benefit them greatly. “I’m trying to get back to the Dome and get better than sixth place last year,” Schumacher said. “We’ll bring stuff in from this tournament this year and take it back to Washington.”
Schumacher currently ranks as the #14 player in the PrepHoops Washington Class of 2019 rankings.
