Baribeau, a 6-foot-6 senior, is a walking double-double for Mesabi East and has been uber productive for a number of years now. As one of the best players in the Iron Range, Baribeau is excited about what his team could do this winter.
“We have pretty much our starting five back from last year so we’ve got some big goals,” said Baribeau. “I think we have a chance to do really well competing in our conference and section. Hibbing will be tough. They’ve got a lot of their guys back. Greenway is good. Virginia should be good again too. There are a lot of good teams, so it makes for a fun year because there are good games pretty much every night.”
Baribeau produces at a high level while playing a low-maintenance game. He doesn’t require a lot of touches, rather he’s very effective at getting his numbers organically. He runs the floor extremely well for a big man, he’s active on the offensive glass, he’s got good hands and can finish in traffic and he’s good at putting the ball on the floor and using a dribble or two to beat slower defenders.
“I think my biggest strength is rebounding, I pride myself on that area of the game and controlling the paint,” Baribeau said. “I want to continue working on my shot. I don’t have as much range and extending that would help open things up in terms of getting to the basket.”
Baribeau’s got the size and athleticism to play at the next level. His style of play lends itself to becoming a useful role player but he’s got the upside to be really effective with more development too.
“I would love to play basketball in college,” said Baribeau. “I’ve heard from a number of schools including Hamline, St. Johns and a few others. I’m hoping to go to school for engineering so a big key will be finding a school that is the right fit for me.”
