Recruiting Report: Tony Johnson Jr
A few days ago Tony Johnson Jr of The Skill Factory earned his first major conference scholarship offer. An offer that Tony was very excited about.
“It’s really big time to get an offer from Minnesota,” said Johnson. “It feels really good for a coach of the caliber of Richard Pitino to recognize my talent and give me an opportunity like this. I’m excited.
“It’s every players dream to play high level college basketball. And the Big Ten is a huge conference. That’s big.”
Johnson has spoken to several members of the Minnesota staff but there is one coach he’s hearing the most from.
“I’ve been in contact with Coach Linsted the most and we’re building a good relationship. I’ve also heard from coach Pitino.”
What is next for Johnson? He has the offer from the Gophers plus offers from Fresno State, Middle Tennessee, Santa Clara, St. Bonaventure, and several other programs.
“I’m open right now with my recruitment,” Johnson said. “I don’t have any dates in stone yet.”
Johnson told Prep Hoops that he does hope to visit Minnesota soon. It’s something he has been thinking about the past several weeks. A visit could occur at the end of December or will at some point in January.
In 13 EYBL games played with the Georgia Stars last spring, Johnson scored 5.6 points a game with nearly four boards a contest. He made a third of his shots in EYBL play and 70 percent of his foul shots.
Johnson is originally from Alabama where he played high school through his senior year before heading to prep school in Alabama.
According to Johnson’s Coach, Tony is averaging about 20 points and five assists a game.
