Continue ReadingCalling night’s Magruder’s win over Churchill last night ugly would be an understatement. 50 fouls were called, and a handful of players were ultimately disqualified including Ebby Asamoah. The unsigned senior still had a profound impact on the boards, collecting 12 rebounds before fouling out.
“I would say we probably played down to the other team’s level. That was probably because of the fouls, but I would rate it as a 3 out of 10,” Said Asamoah when asked to assess the team’s overall performance. “We played terribly, but we still won. We came together as a team. Started hitting free throws. Started getting in a rhythm. Our defense and fast breaks definitely helped keep us in the game.”
Asamoah was 0 for 3 from deep tonight, but over time has really become a confident shooter. Earlier this season in a win over Northwest, Asamoah erupted for 40 points, draining nine triples in the game. It wasn’t always like this for him, though. As a sophomore, Asamoah mentioned that he was just an energy guy that rebounded and played defense, but as a junior his coach instilled confidence in him and gave him the green light.
“Thats when my three ball started getting going. The team wasn’t great last year, but we had a couple good games,” he stated. “I’ve been shooting a lot. If I have a rhythm shot. It’s wet like water so. That’s basically it.”
Right now, Asamoah is focused on transitioning into a college level guard. Court vision, passing, and ball handling are some of the things he said he’s working on. Another current focus of his is to help his team accomplish their goal of getting back to the state championship and winning. Asamoah is taking care of business in the classroom as well. He says he had a 3.4 GPA last quarter, and 3.6 weighted cumulative along with a 1200 SAT score.
“Augusta, Gettysburg, and St. Mary’s is alright,” said Asamoah of the schools pursuing him hardest. “UMBC and Mount St. Mary’s recently showed interest.”
Schools tell Asamoah they like his shooting. They he’s a shooter, but they also like his rebounding. Asamoah takes pride in the fact that he’s worked hard to acquire a difficult skill that will translate immediately to the college level.
“I hustle for rebounds. Thats partly my athleticism, but also a hustle thing,” he said. “Coaches like how I rebound as a guard.”
What can he bring to a college program?
“I think I can bring defense, athleticism, and shooting. All those I think are at the college level. The rest of my game I need to improve on. And I’ll work that through practice, through time of my own, stuff like that.”
