Johnson scored a personal best 34 points in his team’s semifinal win over Maret in the Sleepy Thompson. He has embraced a bigger role this season, especially on the defensive end in the back court alongside his brother, Xavier Johnson. During a recent interview with Prep Hoops, he touched on various topics relating to his role, overall game, recruitment, and goals.
PH: What’s the most improved part of your game?
DJ: “I think from last year to this year my attitude has gotten a lot better. Towards my teammates and my coaches. That’s what I’m working on right now.”
PH: What is your role for the team this year?
DJ: “To lead alongside my brother. Help him score, communicate on defense.”
PH: What’s the most underrated part of your overall game?
DJ: “My defense. People probably don’t think I’m a great defender, but I’m gonna strap up.”
PH: Would you say you’re one of the better defenders on the team?
DJ: “I think so, yes.”
PH: What are you working on right now?
DJ: I’m working on everything. My pull-up, finishing, ball handling. Everything a point guard needs to do.”
PH: Who’s recruiting you right now?
DJ: “GW, George Mason, Maryland, and Cincinnati so far.”
PH: What do you think you can bring to a college program?
DJ: “I’m gonna play hard all the time. 110% every time I step on the floor.”
PH: What are some goals that you’ve set for yourself?
DJ: “I’m going to try to average a double-double, 15 points and 10 assists. Average about three steals. Also to win as many games as possible. Win states & the IAC.
PH: What will need to happen in order for you guys to achieve those team goals?
DJ: “We’ve gotta communicate more. Everybody has to talk.”
