Smalls recorded 10 points and 3 rebounds in his team’s recent win at Georgetown Prep, where Columbia Assistant Coach Jared Czech was in to see him. After the game, he spoke a bit about his recruitment among other topics.
PH: How would you evaluate the team performance vs. Prep?
CS: “I would say a 6.5 or 7. We came out strong, but we couldn’t sustain our energy throughout the game, and we got beat pretty bad on the offensive boards.”
PH: What’s been the most improved part of your game in recent months?
CS: “Probably just all around. Mainly focusing on playing lead guard.”
PH: You guys had a ton of turnovers in this game. How were you able to overcome that and win?
CS: “Just perseverance. We know we’re an undersized team. We’re just fighting through everything. We just had to fight through adversity.”
PH: Was there anything you did on the court today that might have been overlooked?
CS: “Sacrificing my body. I feel like I took at least four charges that weren’t called, but just persevering and being able to get stops.”
PH: What’s your GPA right now?
CS: “3.5.”
PH: Columbia was in for you tonight. Which other schools are currently showing you the most interest?
CS: “Delaware, Loyola (MD), Yale, Navy, Mount St. Mary’s, and Princeton.”
PH: What do coaches say they like about your game?
CS: “They like my aggressiveness, my defensive tenacity, the way I guard. Scoring the ball, and decision making. They say I’m a leader on the court.”
PH: What are some goals you’ve set?
CS: “This year I’d like to be named all conference and win a MAC Championship.”
PH: What do you think you can bring to a college program?
CS: “I’m a strong lead guard who can bring leadership, scoring ability, and aggressiveness.
