In his team’s win over Bishop Ireton, James finished with 20 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 steals which was good enough to earn the game’s MVP award. One thing that stood out about the unsigned senior was the confidence he displayed in his jump shot.
“I’ve been working a lot on that so I can play at the next level. Everything is about shooting now,” James said. “It’s definitely an underrated part of my game.”
As a senior, Stallions HC Kenneth Harris has asked James to be a coach on the floor. His role as a leader is to facilitate the ball, and cover everything on the court. Schools like Norfolk State, Hampton, NM State, and Radford are reportedly recruiting him at the moment.
“They like my energy on the court,” James said of the feedback he receives from college coaches. “They like how I play at a high tempo, how I facilitate the ball, how I drive the lane.”
Right now, James is working on shooting, on mostly in the mid range and the three ball. He understands the importance of consistently knocking down shots when receiving the ball on the perimeter.
“The team goal is to win states,” James stated. “My school has never won states before. We always came close, but we were injured or something would come up. That’s definitely the goal this year.”
What can he bring to a college program?
“I can bring energy, that raw dog to the next level. I’m coachable as well.”
Ashley James is currently ranked by Prep Hoops as a top-35 prospect in his class. To view the full ranking of Virginia’s 2019 class, click here.
